Really important point here. All tires are a compromise. Some all seasons are more like winter tires than summer tires, but they’re still not winter tires. No doubt there are some crap winter tires out there that don’t outperform the best all seasons, but that would be a rare exception.

By the same token, some summer tires are closer to all seasons and visa versa. And some winter tires are closer to all seasons than others (eg Pirelli Sottozero), so close examination of reviews and expert tests are recommended.

Still, all else being equal, a good winter tire can’t be beat. And as has been said ad nauseam but deserves repeating nonetheless: tires make more of. a difference than RWD vs FWD vs 4WD.

I think the temperature range is around 42F and below, or ~6C, ordinary tire compounds start to harden and their grip diminishes as temperatures drop.
Driving a true winter tire in icy conditions in a vehicle like a 4 Runner is to feel invincible. But the key is to slow down, and drive the conditions no matter what tire you’re running. There’s a significant safety advantage in winter tires, imho.

Is this the point where I apologize for bringing it up? :boink:

Of course this will vary from one tire to the next. Tires stamped with the snowflake should respond better to cold weather than non-snowflake tires. I've driven through enough winters here to know this from experience.

I am not talking about all-season tires. I am talking about 3PMSF tires. Some are better than others. The KO2's were not quite as good as other tires I have had (in the snow.. They were very good in most conditions).

Absolutely! And, I completely agree. You have to remember, though, that our winters are a bit milder than yours.:D

I might eventually get a set of winter tires for it, though. They're worth the money.

Because I don’t want to let this sub topic of a sub thread go :pout: :rofl:I’ll throw out there that last winter was so mild I got away with summer tires (that were on the all-season end of the summer spectrum) on my AWD Subaru. But I wouldn’t recommend it.

Will now search my memory for other tire anecdotes so we can keep this going...o_O :crapstorm:

Nothing’s perfect, Thatbassguy, a couple of cons are they’re expensive, if you get wheels and tpms sensors, and you need a spot to store them, preferably in a garage. I’m lucky that in the small town where we live, the local tire shop has a big storage area and he stores the off season tires for me for free. Pretty nice of him. But maybe shops in the big city do this too, I don’t know. You can mount a tire rack in your garage, but they’re put heavy to handle to move in and out of storage if they require any lifting. A guess one pro, might be the reduced wear on the K02s during winter.

I'm not really concerned about storage space or cost. Also, I don't have KO2's anymore.

    Falken > KBRO2

also the falkens are 3 peak rated, no need for winter tires

    GTF outta here with that!

The Falkens are a good option for sure.

KO2's are 3PMSF tires as well.

Looks like I'll need to unbolt the winch to get it in the bumper.

Probably have to unbolt the bumper to unbolt the winch. Rainy day work.

The winch bolts on from underneath. SOS was nice enough to leave access holes in the bumper.

I don't have a garage, so definitely not rainy day work. :D

Interesting. Mine is a Victory 4x4 Blitz and really tucked in there which was what I liked about it. After years of repairing tractors, vehicles and all types of farm equipment on dirt floors in old machine sheds, I’m blessed to now have a nice clean garage with a smooth concrete floor that a creeper just glides across. It’s luxury!

Yeah, the winch is well protected. There are small cutaways that allow access to the bolts. It will come in handy if it ever requires service.

I have access to a few nice garages. My buddies enjoy a project. It's a good excuse to have a few beers and catch up.

Sorry thatbassguy! Didn't mean to flip this to a tire thread. Perhaps my issue was mine were on a pickup truck with little to no weight in the back. When it got wet/cold the rear would slide out round corners quite often. That winter i switched to defenders and could take the same corners at a higher speed and they held quite well.
    Summertime, loved the KOs

No problem! Like I said, they were a great all around tire. I had an idea what their strengths and weaknesses were when I bought them and drove accordingly. I was never disappointed.

I've been spending all of my money on gas and beer all summer ;)

I think I'm going to leave it alone for a bit and try to save for a few trips next year.

I might attempt to build a roof rack this winter. Maybe upgrade the stereo, clean up the wiring, battery upgrade (AGM maybe), odds and ends.
