Basic TPMS Question - 2nd Set of Wheels

Planning my switch to snow tires for my first winter with my 2020 TRD Off-Road. I typically buy a set of tires mounted on wheels from Tirerack and just swap them on/off myself. But, being a dinosaur, I've never had to deal with TPMS before.

If I order a set of tires/wheels with aftermarket TPMS sensors, will I be able to program the system to recognize the new sensors from the multi-information display? Or will I need a dealer or tire shop using some fancy tool to make the vehicle learn the new codes?

How many annoying warning lights/beeps/buzzers will I have to ignore if I run a second set of wheels without TPMS?

 

Hey MG9001, good questions. I’ve found Toyota’s a little balky around generic tpms senders so I went the extra mile and bought Toyota OEM for mine. I think the tpms warning system is a good thing, and being a little OC I decided I didn’t want to stare at warning light for months on end. When the tire shop mounted the tires they installed the tpms units and once they’re set up, they’ve been recognized ever since. I haven’t had to do a thing.

 

I'd like to know too.

Does the vehicle automatically recognize the new sensors after driving a mile or two? (my BMW did when I'd mount my winter tire and wheel set from Tirerack)

Or do you have to fiddle with some computer setting to force it to recognize them?

Or do you need a tool that only mechanics tend to have? (I think that's true for Subarus)

Anyone know?

 

I don’t think the tire shop did anything special with mine. The car recognizes them when the wheels are switched now.

 

Cool, thanks. When you said they set it up I wasn't sure if that meant they'd used some tool or something.

Anyone have experience with generic TPMS on their Runners? eg what you'd get from Tire Rack?

 

2020s need something special some guys here said even their dealer didn't have to tool yet.

I'd call and ask specifically if they can reprogram the 2020s.

Pretty sure you also can't have the 4R remember 8 TPMS. So I'd leave the light on for the winter.

 

It only recognizes 4 at a time. For sure you wouldn’t want it picking up nearby Toyota’s in traffic.

 

Wondering how much are costs for the TPMS. Never had this problem until I bought a 2015 Trail.

Cost of transferring TPMS that's already in the stock wheels to aftermarket wheels?
Cost of programming/labor of new TPMS to the aftermarket wheels?

 

Call your local tire shop. Its never the same.

Hell they might do it free if you buying the tires from them.

In reference, this is what I got from America's Tire/Discount Tire rep on the phone in Torrance:

Transfer existing TPMS from oem wheels to aftermarket wheels with mounted tires: Mount and balance for 8 wheels, est $20.00 each wheel plus fees? est $160+

Buy new TPMS (price range from aftermarket ($10.00 cheapest) to OEM ($100.00 each)) + mount and balance 4 wheels at $20.00 each plus programming fee? est $480+

I can save money by buying aftermarket TPMS, but anyone here has experience using aftermarket TPMS?

 

Not sure if this helps but I hope to have a Toyota specific answer in a few weeks when I get my snows. I had no issues with my 2014 Pathfinder using tire+rim+tmps aftermarket setup from Tirerack. The local tire shop programmed them once and then I could swap the tires myself each season and the car recognized them after the switch without reprogramming.

I have a set of 2020 ORP rims that I bought used on the marketplace page. I will be putting Blizzaks DM-V2s on them. Swapping is easy as I have a cordless impact wrench that does a great job. I am doing some tmps research now and seeing if the local shop guarantees theirs or if I can pickup stock ones on sale. I think ez sensor schrader 33500 will work , except you need someone program and sycn to your vehicle.

 

Just a quick update. I finally got around to installing my second set of rims with the snow tires mounted on them. I added the tpms:

On the 2020 ORP it was easy to program but you need to be patient. The directions in the manual were correct, but it took about 35 min of driving around before the car finally recognized the new sensors. No tools needed as I have seen some reports where people thought they needed special tools. It is a built in setting to in the display, just be patient and give it time to find the sensors. You can turn the car off in between if you must so its not like you have to drive an entire hour.

Went with the Plasti-Dip Matt Black for the second set of stock ORP Rims. You can see the compare.

 

We installed the factory TPMS units in aftermarket wheels on our 2020 ORP, the local tire shop did it for free because we bought the rims from them, it took about 2 mins. They(TPMS) are pretty accurate, I am OCD about tire air pressure and check them often, and if you can believe a little $5.00 tire air gauge.... system works fine!

 

Yes you re-used the factory TPMS.

He was asking about using aftermarket TPMS which would require reprogramming.

 

My TPMS were not factory, they were purchased on ebay for $105 for a set of 4. The company has many different types and frequencies but you can search by model of your car and get the correct frequency for the 4Runner. I installed the on the rims myself, then had Mavis Auto put the new snows I purchased from them on the rims. I then installed them on the car myself (love my new Makita Impact wrench) and all you need to do is go into the settings menu as directed in the manual and put it in the mode to recognize new sensors. Then drive about 25 -35 min and the car will eventually find them. No issue for me now 2 days after installation. I can just repeat the process when I put my standard tires back on in the spring.

 

Well good to know. There was a bunch of threads out there that they couldn't get it reprogrammed at the shop. Don't need the shop to do it maybe thats why the confusion.

 

Question. I have aftermarket sensors in my 20 and all spring summer they were spot on checking with a gauge. Not sure if it's cold weather but now they read 5psi low. I did try the relearn and same thing.
Is there a way to calibrate them? Thanks

 

The tire shop where I go to gave me the option of running stock TPMS or aftermarket, and since I'm so cheap I opted to run the stock ones, either way the guy said it was "No prob" either way. he had a small calculator looking thing(programmer)and told me he can reprogram stock or aftermarket, didn't matter. I've known these guys at the tire shop for decades, I'm pretty sure they are on it. (sorry about the long time return on the subject) Check frequency of TPMS before hand though, there are several and Toyota has I thought 315mhz.
