The Rod Knock Gamble

Hi everyone, I have some pretty bad rod knock and was planning on replacing the engine but then I got lazy and realized I don't have the money or time... so I have decided to gamble.

I took the oil pan off and am going to replace the main bearings and rod bearings that way. So far I have noticed at least 4 of the 6 rod bearings are loose and need replacement severely. The others I will be replacing anyway.

I have taken all 8 bolts off of what appears to me to be one large main bearing cap. However, I can't seem to take the cap off. It just kinda moves from side-to-side. Does anyone know how to remove this piece so I can replace my main bearings?

When I get the bearings off I will be taking 600 grit wetsandpaper and WD-40 to the bearings to smooth out any small scoring etc. This is the best I will be able to do without taking the engine and crankshaft out.

So everyone here are my questions:

1. How do you take the main bearing cap off? Is what I have described above even a main bearing cap?

2. What gaskets should I order so I can successfully reassemble everything to do this job?

3. Will I need to order any bolts? (When I did my head gasket replacement I ordered new head bolts as they stretch when torqued)

4. Where can I find/ what are the torque specs and torque sequence for rod bearing caps, main bearing cap, oil pan bolts, oil strainer, oil baffle?

You think you're gambling, but you're not, there's no way you come out of this a winner. You might buy a little bit of time before shit goes south again, but depending on the state of your journals and your own mechanical ability there's a good chance that this won't work at all. I get that you're hung up on trying to save this motor, but there's a reason you got dogpiled on T4R.org by people saying it's a bad idea, and that's because they know what they're talking about and it's a bad idea. With your skillset, you just cannot do a good job rebuilding your bottom end with the motor in the truck. It just won't happen. You will not succeed, it will be an absolute waste of your money and time. I love that you're willing to take a swing at it, I think that's great, please listen to the guys who have been there and done that and learn from their mistakes instead of yours. Pull the motor, get it on a stand, take the crank and rods into a machine shop for polishing and mic'ing so you can order the correct size replacement bearings. Or get your credit card and take it to a mechanic. Or sell it for what you can get and buy another vehicle. All of those are vastly superior options to a noob mechanic trying to replace bad bearings with the motor in the truck.

 

After reading this I had to go find this thread over on T4R.ORG. All I can say is WOW! Quite the page turner. I'll be staying tuned in for the next exciting chapter of "I've Lost My Bearings, Which Way Do I Go!?"

I know I gave you a pretty much dead on Est on the needed repairs. Were are you toady? Are you still thinking about doing this?

I'll also tell you this. If you were my customer standing at my counter and you told us to just do it this way. I would simply hand you the keys and tell you the name of another shop. We tell you all of this because most if not all of us have seen it or been there man. I know I have. I throw a rod in my first truck. Granted a 302 Ford is a lot eisier to work on but putting a built 460 in its place was no easy task.

On track with segway, have you every had the timing done. I had what I thought was ticking and after doing my timing belt & water pump, etc, it is gone. I thought it could be injectors, lifters or wrist pin but it's now gone. You try two tanks of Shell V power as well?

OP...just reading what you posted on here...not T4R. I'm assuming you don't have a lot of money?? Which is why you're trying to switch out bearings and put it back together on the cheap??

If I were you, go on eBay and buy a used JMD motor. Their motors come out of Japanese cars with very low mileage on them. From my understanding...the Japnese have really tough emissions...worst than California...if that's possible!! From what I've been told, usually after 50,000 miles or so their cars will no longer pass emissions. For them it's cheaper to buy a new car then attempt to get their old car in complaisance with the emissions. So they will strip out the motor/trans and sell them around the world. The average mileage is somewhere between 40-60,000 miles and can be purchased for around $1000-$1500. Dude, it's hard to find a complete rebuild kit for that price. Buy one of these motors take out your old one...drop in the new one...your back on the road in less than 2days!! Depending on your skill sets!! Here's one of 30+ I saw on eBay...

This particular one as 66,000 miles and it's $1200. I'd send them an offer of $1000 and be loving life with an almost new engine.
