Reason not to go with Fox Suspension Lift

So I'm lifting my 4Runner. It came stock from dealer with a 3" in front 1" in rear leveling kit and 285/70/17's on TRD rims.

I've read all the forums and reviews on all the different suspensions out there. King, Toytech, Icon, Dobbinsons, Bilstein and Fox. Everyone seems to have their pros and cons on all of them.

I won't be rock crawling and nothing too extreme. Mainly backwoods adventures to camp and go shooting with friends. I would like to improve my ride quality and off road capabilities when called upon. King seems to be the best choice but is very expensive and seems overkill for what I'd be doing.

So what is everyone's take on Fox? It too might be overkill for me. However, I have an account with Fox through my bike shop and spoke to the rep at Fox and they will let me purchase my suspension at an Employee Purchase discount. So I can get a good price on everything.

Is Fox worth it?

 

I think in a case like yours, Fox could be just what you are looking for at a great price.

 

If you’re getting a deal go for it. It’s more than you need but so what, realistically a 4Runner is overkill for what you’ll need.

 

I have rear fox shocks and I think they’re great. I’m actually thinking about swapping my 5100’s in the front for some fox shocks as they’re more budget friendly than other brands and still deliver great performance.

 

Agreed with what's been said so far. I haven't really heard anything bad about Fox. The PRO comes with Fox shocks, and most guys seem to like them.

 

If you’re not getting the fox 2.5’s you’ll be disappointed. Imo. If you’re looking to improve ride and not break the bank Bilstein 6112/5160 would be your best bet imo. Along with a new set of coils for the rear.

 

I'd go all out and get the 2.5's. UCA's and springs for the rear. If I'm gunna do it, I'll do it right.

Agree with most. If you can get a good price then yes! It’s soft and some don’t like this. I personally do. Never hardly feel a bump. Soaks them up nicely. There are better but would cost you more. A lot more.

I’ll only mention Elka’s since you didn’t include them but they’re arguably a bit better than King. Since you can get a deal on Fox, I’d go with that. A 4 Runner needs 2.5’s, imho, so it’s good you’re going with that size. Rear springs depends on the amount of lift you want to dial in. At 1 - 1.5” in front, similar to a TRD Pro, you can use a spacer and keep your stock springs because of the amount of rake a 4 Runner has in stock form. It doesn’t take much to level out a modest lift.

 

Reason? - because Ironman Foam Cell Pro exists. Cannot beat the quality and value of the kits.

Also, just being honest, (OP) I think even a stock runner FAR exceeds what most owners will ask of it. Fox, Icon among others are quality products but they really just have the popular name. Ironman is excellent. They have foam cell and nitro shocks(cheaper) but likely exceed expectations. Unless you're truly baja-ing or in need of long travel, im not joking, stock is pretty damnn good.

I bet for almost all runner owners a bone stock SR5 can tackle obstacles a novice driver doesn't have the balls to attempt. There's driver comfort level and vehicle capability and they usually never match up. If you think you need 2.5 Fox shocks and gobs of lift chances are you dont know the stock suspension capability. Unless you're afraid of getting scratches and bumps on your mall crawler.
