Hello everyone, I've been a Toyota owner for years but never had a 4runner, I've always liked the 3rd gen body style. Any recommendations or tips? Thanks in advance

2wd examples cost less and can be found in better conditions and they are easier to find unmodified. When buying from someone who isn't the original owner don't assume the current owner knows everything about the vehicle, because they cant.

The manual transmission was dropped after 2000, the 1999 model year got updated to have better cup holders which is something I wish my 1997 had. The automatics can suffer from the 'pink milkshake' issue, I'm not going to go into specifics about that but watch out for it.

If the car has an undercoat make sure you know that it wasn't added to hide something like rust, and new tires should also trigger a red flag.

The 4 cylinder engine was dropped in 2000, and while it is reliable and has a timing chain, its under powered. The 6 cylinders have a timing belt so its important to ask about when it was changed because it can be costly to replace.

Edit: Misunderstood question. If you already got one then look over it and make sure there isn't anything close to failing. I got my radiator replaced because I noticed cracks starting to form, it was the original one so age had taken its toll on the integrity of it. If the frame is good, get it undercoated so you wont have to worry about rust developing.
