Hello all! After wanting a 4runner for nearly 20 years I am officially the owner of an awesome 2000 Limited. It's in tremendous shape and I got a smoking deal on it.

Anybody reading this privvy to the 4wd options for this particular truck?? I noticed on the 4wd gear shift that 2wd also is marked as 4hh. I used to use a 2000 4wd Tacoma and my tacoma did not have this unique distinction. Also, as you shift through all variants of 4wd on the 4runner gear shift (starting with 2h/4hh), go down to what is typically understood as 4H, but this one is marked 4Hl (lower case L there), and then over right and up gives you what is classically just known as 4L but this is noted as 4ll (both lowercase L's there).

Along with these curiosities I noticed that there is a button on the left side of the main gear shift that reads "4wd" also.
Wondering how to interpret all these options. My first guess is that the 2h/4hl can be more of an AWD feature when the 4wd button is activated on main gear shift??

    Any thoughts/answers????

    Thanks all.

    Krager.

Hello Krager! buttons aye. The button on the transfercase shifter selects 4wd hi range. Use it in normal high 4wheel drive conditions. you will see the 4wheels light up on the dash. If you want 4wd locked pull the lever straight back You'll see a dot light in the center of the wheels. Use this when you need better traction heavy snow, ice, mud, sand ect.
Now if you are lugging the engine to much in this mode move the select forward to 4wd low and I would not exceed 25mph in this mode. Now I always stop or slow to a crawl before I move gear shift to neutral before I select or deselect any 4wd mode but that's just me. Now if the lights are flashing on the dash, stop and put it in reverse and backup slowly and see if the lights stop flashing Some times this happens when coming out of 4wd modes.
Now there is a button the gear shift that turns off over drive in the transmission. Also you may have a button on the dash ECT which puts the transmission in a different mode, it shifts at higher rpm and is a performance gimic. It could be usefull if you have to tow something heavy. I just did a lot of work on a 1999 and 2000 4runner so if you need help with something let me know. Also I don't know what the mileage is on yours but there should be sticker on under the hood showing when the timing belt has been changed. Should be done no later than ever 90k miles. Also you can log on to toyota owners .com and become a member. You'll need your VIN. It will show you all maintenance and recalls performed at a toyota dealer.

I forgot 4Hl means 4wd High range transfer case locked. 4ll means 4wheel drive low range transferr case locked. Lower case l means locked transfer case. Transfer case locked means that the front differential and rear differenials are locked together in the transfer case and drive shafts will turn at the same rate. Hope that helps.
