Good buy or not?

So I found a black 99' Toyota 4runner sr5 2wd with 124,000 on it. It has a 3'' suspension lift,2'' body lift,4x innovations plate bumper,35'' cooper sst's with probably 80% tread,kicker head unit along with kicker door speakers and 12'' L5 sub,and firestick.It has had the timing belt and water pump replaced,all new brakes and rotors all the around, full fluid flush(brakes,trans,radiator,etc),and list of other things I am forgeting.The interior and exterior are in really good condition(no rips or stains inside).I have two questions.Is $7000 a good deal?He has not regeared it and says he is getting 15mpg...should it be regeared?I think it has a 4.10 in it.Anything I should look for or check?Any help appreciated!

 

If it is 2wd SR5 im pretty sure it has 3.93 gears or even worse. I never understood why people bother lifting a 2wd, but if thats what you want I guess.

Again, that's just more money into a 2wd..

You should first figure out what gear ratio it currently has. You can check by the code on the placard on the door jamb or by jacking the vehicle up and counting rotations. Google how to do those. Once you know what it has, you can feel for what you want.

Being a 2x4...I think $7000 is a little on the high side. If it was 4x4...I'd say go for it!!

With such high gears...I find it hard to believe he's getting 15mpg. That poor little engine has to be just lugging all the time...running 35's and 3.93 gears?!? Have you driven it? Don't be surprise if 1960's VW Beetles and VW Bus' pass you...lol!! Yes...it definitely needs regeared. You'll be looking around $650 to regear...maybe that will help you in negotiations for a better price.

My number is 3123. What dose that mean. I got more HP out of the gearing?

Torque actually. With all the weight you have it is probably good that you are setup like that. You will just suffer with more rpms at the same speed as with other gears.

 

I was thinking that. The bigger truck actually get out of the hole and off a stop light faster than my 99. I was just not sure how to read the chart.

 

Thanks for the website russ. What is the stock RPM's when ya'll run around 70mph? He said his ran right around 2000rpm's at 70mph and 2300-2400rpm's running 75-80mph.

 

Then he is definitely on something less than 4.10s.

BTW when reading the gear ratio chart.. the area where it says better mpg is for highway use. Better city MPG will be found in the "More power" area of the curve. Having a heavy truck in the "Better mpg" section of ratios will have really bad MPG.

 

with 35's you should target 4.88s

 

I totally agree Ripcord. That will allow your engine to run at the proper RPM's...That will give you the best fuel economy and the most power from your engine. Basically that will re-set your drivetrain back to factory settings.
