2020 oil change

Should I change oil every 5k or 10k. Toyota says 10k. It only has 5k I brought it in already for them to “check” fluids

 

Yeah I ran into this problem where the 4Runner said “Oil Maintenance Required” at 5k but when I took it in, they said that it needed to be done at 10k and rotated my tires. They haven’t updated the software yet.

 

My mechanic said that Toyota says 10k and manufacturer says 5k and they don’t agree. And he was gonna look it up but I left and forgot to have him look

 

Most vehicles are made for 10k changes these days.
I personally do 7500 mile intervals since I do a lot of city driving

 

not sure what you’re referring to as manufacturer, but your manual says 10k.

 

I’m sure if I was paying for it they would say 5k miles. Just seems like there’s two dif opinions on when to do it. I know the Manual says 10k. Wasn’t sure if there was a definitive answer on here somewhere.

 

That's bullshit from a dealer that wants your money

 

Your runner comes with free oil changes so if you want to go get them at 5k, point that out on their website

I'm going Oil every 5k and filter every 10k. I don't drive it a lot in Corona world so I don't mind throwing a few extra dollars down the drain if it's premature.

 

10K unless you meet the criteria spelled out in the owners manual for severe use.

For piece of mind change it at 5K for the first oil change and send a sample to black stone labs. They will analyze your specific oil out of your actual engine and tell you how it’s holding on up and what you should do moving forward. I can tell you now they are not going recommend 5K intervals though.

 

I do it every 6 month. Because of short trips it'll take more than a year to get to 5K. Also short trips considered as severe use due to cold start ups and hardly reaching hot engine temps needed to evaporate condensation in various areas.

 

I recently went for my 25k service and told them I would pay for the oil change out of pocket. The guy told me he would do it if I wanted, but it’s a waste of money. He said once I hit 50k miles, I might want to start doing it every 5k, but he said with the full synthetic oil there is no need to do it now. I’m 50/50 on if he was telling the truth. A part of me thinks he could have just said okay and let me pay for the oil change. Another part of me doesn’t see much harm that can be done if I wait until 50k to start changing it every 5k.

 

Oil and filter is rather cheap. Doesn’t hurt to change it every 5K.

 

Well, you can't change it too often, I change mine every 5K.... it seems ready for it too (color). As a comparison, heavy-machinery manufacturers use hour-meters to determine oil-change intervals... and 50 hours of run time is typical. Issue is for me that comes in at about 2500 miles. I plan to have the vehicle for at least ten years, so whatever I can do to get there. It's a time-consuming task however. '18 SR5 Premium 24K miles.

 

Look, the people who designed and built the thing say change the oil at 10K unless you're driving in severe conditions. In that case you should change at 5K. But severe conditions includes a whole lot of stuff that a whole lot of people do: off road, dirty/dusty conditions, towing, heavy loads, short trips, extreme temps, and city driving. Thus, even the engineers believe that 5K is needed if you're not operating your vehicle in pristine conditions, such as commuting on the highway.

Thus, 5K makes perfect sense to be on the safe side for everybody, and is a necessity for some. So it's hardly a ridiculous waste of money.

 

I changed my oil and filter right in the driveway yesterday. Used conventional/dino in 5-gallon jug - premium from NAPA. Oil was 4,000 miles old.
I got my first leaks/drips when I changed to synthetic, so I changed back to 10W-40.
I have a V6 2005 4runner with 144,000 miles.
10,000 mile interval is to long for synthetic or any oil IMO.
Oil gets black at 5000 miles.
My 4runner is in Bahamas where temps are between 60F and 90F all year long.

 

About to take mine in for its 10K mile oil change. I have no desire to do it myself.
