Fuel filter on 1993 4runner

    Anybody have any tricks on how to replace the fuel filter. I have looked at most of the videos showing how to do this but none of them look like mine. The filter on mine is located passenger side, in the frame, behind the transfer case skid plate. I can reach and remove the fuel line from the fuel tank, but getting the line that goes to the motor is almost impossible. I can get the wrench on it but there is no way to turn it. The thing I don't understand is there is a clear spot about 10 inches behind the filter with nothing in it. I am thinking about cutting the line, flaring it and moving the filter back there.

    This is the first time it has ever taken me 2 days to change a fuel filter. I finally got a wrench on the front fitting but could not turn it, got the filter loose in the guard and turned it from the rear until it was loose enough to turn with my fingers.

    Seriously thinking about. Why would they place it like that, still mad about the war ?? OK, fuel tank drained, new filter, 5 gal of fresh gas, injector cleaner, lines drained, going to try to start it today. This rig has sat for at least 2 years but probably more. The fuel that was in the tank was so rotten it gave me a headache. If it starts, I will run it till warm, then drain oil and trans fluid.

    With all the above done, it still will not start. It will run on starting fluid, as that is going in through the air system. Where is the fuel introduced to the intake? When I removed the fuel filter I had fuel run back from the motor so figured the line cleared its self. Maybe not...

    I pulled the fuel line off the fuel rail and nothing, no fuel is being pumped. Next step is to drop the fuel tank and check the pump and filter screen. I have noticed that some have cut the floor above the pump area so they don't need to drop the tank, is the fuel pump a problem on the toy's.

    ive seen people cut holes also. personally, id stay away from it. your call, your truck bud.

    let us know if you were able to replace the filter amd if that solved your problem

    Not sure if the pump is running or not. With all the crud that I drained out of the gas tank, the in tank filter is probably plugged but we will know shortly..........I found a removable cover that leads to the fuel line that is on the tank, open it there and try blowing on the line, see what happens.

    Spent the day working on the toy, removing the fuel tank is a pain and next time there will be a hole in the floorboards. there are 5 bolts holding the skid pan, 5 bolts holding the fuel tank, 4 bolts holding the cover to the fill line, the fill line and vent are held by a bracket that you access from the other side of the car with a long----extension, the heads on the stainless clamps have rusted off and had to be cut. I found you can almost reach all the elect lines, power-gage- etc so the tank needs to be dropped in front to remove the elect lines. If you turn the tank to the side you can clear some of the e-brake lines and the drive shaft. What a pain, as I said, a hole will be cut in the floor just over the pump and sending unit. As I write this the tank is on the ground but that's all, got too dark to go any further. Maybe working in a shop with lights and air would speed things up, but that's not where I am, I did manage to get it on a concrete slab so that was a good thing. Oh, there are two fuel lines that need to be disconected

    Don't know why it posted, I wasn't finished yet. I just got my book on the toy and can't find anything on the 4 runners having air bags, this one has them. Do all 4 runners have them or is this something a p.o. installed? I also had to remove the right rear tire to get to the cover that is over the fuel lines. Way more work then it needed to be. Now that the tank is down I will cover all fuel lines and cut the floor boards with a grinder, I have a roll of heavy tin that I will cut to form the bracket to hold the floorboards that I will cut out.

    OK, a question, does the fuel pump have a check valve to stop the fuel from returning to the tank.? I could blow from the connector in the line to the front, but no go from the connector to the tank.

    Pulled the fuel pump from the tank and found the line and pump completely plugged. Ordering a new pump and fill hose, I got to the point that fill hose would not come loose so I just cut it, that will teach it to mess with me. I don't think this truck has ever been off road, no mud or real dirt under here.

    You can see here that the hose clamp is facing the wrong way and there is no way to reach it.

    I unhooked it up here, but the clamp would not let go, the nut would not turn, so I cut it just above the tank, ya, it will need replaced.

    I can't believe that I have lost the rubber from between the fuel pump and the bracket bottom. I took it apart in the shop, it has not gone out anywhere, has to be in there, just can't find it. Any suggestions???

    OK, I made a flange to set the cutout on, sealed it with RTV and using pop rivets set it in place.

    I cut it with a 4inch grinder and a cut off wheel, I outlined the patch and then cut it 1/2 inch more.

    Holding it with clamps and vice grips I drilled and pop riveted it to the underside of the floor.

    Next the floor will be pre-drilled and set on to the flange, more RTV should seal it. As this is under the seat and will never be walked on this should hold very well

    Don't know where that first photo came from, it should be the flange. It's a photo the wife took a couple of days ago I McCall Idaho.

    Those wheels look like they are from 3rd gen 4runner or 1st gen tacoma. Good luck on your continuing project. I am glad I paid to have my fuel filter changed. Man said it was a pain in the butt.

    I changed my fuel filter yesterday. The trick is a 14mm, 6 point, flare nut crows foot on an extension. I had the filter installed in less than an hour.

    I concur and had headed in this direction with my own crows foot only to find the PO had rounded the blasted flare nut so badly that only a vice grip or pipe wrench will do. One cannot easily get one of those in there so I am in a holding pattern and may have to cut and replace the fuel line as an alternative fix.
