Just thought I would share a project I just finished. A while back I saw that Toyotas from similar years use the same steering wheel, but Siennas had steering wheel mounted radio controls. I ended up making new internals and wiring it in to my Pioneer head unit and now have steering wheel controls! I set it up to have vol up, vol down, mute, mode change, skip song, previous song. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be pause support on the Pioneer.

It was simple enough to do. Parts needed to make the project go easily are:
    • Controller housing off the Sienna
    • Desoldered and removed connector housing
    • Controller harness, depinned from clock spring connector
    • Sienna clock spring
    • Sienna steering wheel, though you could get away with just the back shroud and bracket that holds the controller
    • Two wires off the dash side of the clock spring connector, these will be grafted onto a 3.5 mm jack that connects to the head unit
    • T20 torx driver to remove the audio controller, (then you slide it toward you before you can remove it,) and T27 to remove the air bag. Don't forget to disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes before you do that.
I've attached a schematic and PCB files. Once you had a board, if you know how to solder it together it's easy enough. You desolder the connector from the Sienna controller and put that on the new board.

From there, you have to wire everything in. This includes removing the old steering wheel and clock spring, then you add two wires from the Sienna harness to that connector, graft those to a 3.5 mm jack, and plug that in to the head unit. Next you replace the clock spring with the Sienna 6 wire clock spring.

Before putting the steering wheel back on, you need to switch the cruise control switch over from your old steering wheel, as the signals are different between the two cars despite looking exactly the same. While it's out is the best time to wire in the audio controller harness. This will use the last two spots on the old connector. To wire in the illumination, the blue wire from the audio harness needs to be spliced onto the white/black wire going to CC, and the black/silver goes to the red on CC. This will illuminate the controller when the key is turned to ACC.

Anyway, if there's any interest I can help put some more of these together, either sending out just the populated PCBs or having you send me parts and I'd send back a plug and play setup. At the very least, I still have 4 sets of unpopulated PCBs. I'm not trying to make a profit, but I'm totally down to help the community.

I just wanted to share this project, but feel free to ask any questions!

**Update on this, I had issues trying cruise control for the first time today. The illumination feature on the remote may not actually be possible.

Wow, glad I found this thread. I started research on this about a week ago and found the Sienna wheel identical so off to pick and pull i went. Paid $45 for the 01 Sienna steering wheel with the steering wheel controls, cruise control, clock spring, and Sienna two pin remote harness that is normally plugged into the oem head unit. I don't use cruise control so it would it be a safe bet to just plug and play everything? I was gonna trace the wires first and really thought the cruise control modules/wiring are the same, guess not based on your findings. Gonna tackle it this weekend.
