What do you carry in your 4R all the time and why?

when off road: shackle hitch receiver, tire repair kit, tow rope & chain, jackall, metric & standard wrench kit, compressor,
flash light, lighter, first aid kit, insect repellent, jerry can with fuel, leatherman, fuses, jumper cable, toilet paper.

 

giggle smoke, smoochy woochy, lime pillows, cabbage, catnip, broccoli, christmas trees, marching powder, Florida snow, joy flakes, heaven dust, devil’s dandruff, racehorse charlie, star-spangled powder, dance fever, Beyoncé, Top Gun, Rocky III, booty juice, brain ticklers, and krazy kandy........to name a few.

Are you even allowed to have a gun in Canada? Or do they just allow 1 bullet to be carried in your pocket. Those are a lot of iffy reasons not to carry a gun.

 

Yeah, a long gun if you have a licence for it and its hunting season. There’s absolutely no reason for a gun in Canada unless you’re a legitimate hunter, shoot skeet, or you are one of Canada’s biathlon athletes. Of course we have serial killers, mass shooters, criminals and police just like everywhere else, but you have a better chance of being killed by lightening than being confronted by any of them where having a gun in your hands would make a difference.

 

Ok, I’m partially messing with you, but carrying a gun in Canada is complicated and this forum isn’t for that purpose, so let’s just let it pass. Let’s just say the gun culture in Canada and the USA is totally different. I personally think it stems from the Cypress Hills Massacre in 1873, but there’s a lot to Google about Canadian gun laws if you’re interested. Life’s a journey, enjoy!
Btw, gun transgressions in Canada are commonly criminal offences, and can result in federal offences, fines and prison.

 

Ok one last thought. We have a lot of people in America that do not want us to be armed, they say, the Police will protect you. Those same people now want to Defund the Police.

Bringing things back the actual forum topic as I’m a little more educated in the Cypress Hill Massacre and the Assiniboine.

A less facetious answer to my previous post.

I always carry a tire inflator, and a generic safety box of goodies; suture kit, charcoal, sulfur tabs. Road flares and water cleaning tablets as well. It should be a general consensus that the things I carry work for me. Hopefully this list will provide you with the basics needed to construct your own personal needs kit!

 

When offroading I believe that food, water, and extra clothing are #1. I'm always ready to spend the night if I have to. Obviously tools, and tire repair and tow ropes are very important. But I would say duct tape and a strong bailing wire have gotten me out of the most jams.

 

Some people here say they carry extra axles, extra battery, extra alternator, etc... That would be great if you were planning an off-road trip to the tip of south America.

Or you had a seriously old un-reliable rig. I have been to some crazy places, but never got close to needing that stuff. I also don't beat my rigs.

 

Yeah, I totally agree, Randy H! It’s interesting, though. I guess there must be some wild places out there that everyone goes to.

 

Most of my "Wild" places have been in and around Moab Utah, but also Colorado, Nevada, and California.

 

I have a cargo box in the hatch with the following:

First aid kit
Jumper cables
Flares
Tow strap
Duct tape, zip ties and bungie cords
Tire plug kit
Spare headlight bulbs
Disposable nitrile gloves
Quart of 0W-20
Vinyl seat cover
Fire starter
A survival handbook
Rain poncho and change of clothes inc. ski cap and winter gloves
Some contractor and ziplock plastic bags
Prob other stuff I don't remember...

Up front I have:

Leatherman
LED flashlight
Phone charger
COVID masks
More disposable nitrile gloves
Alcohol wipes

Things I'd consider adding to the above:

A space blanket and/or emergency sleeping bag
Decent but small air compressor

Anyone got other suggestions?

I don't know what water is. Living in the desert southwest I have never experienced mud or water. I think it rained once a few months ago, but it dried up before it hit the ground. 7% humidity and 115 degrees +

 

I did many of the difficult trails in Moab in my FJ cruiser. It handled them all with ease and comfort.

 

Mask and latex gloves for covid.

Ziplock bags, plastic grocery bags, and toilet paper in case I'm out in wilderness and have to go to bathroom.

Two spare towels in case I get wet or dirty wherever I'm at.

 

I’ve thought about packing a set of those disposable coveralls for the day I get a flat tire on a gravel road in the pouring rain and I have to drag the spare out from underneath the vehicle, but I haven’t done it yet. I just know I’ll never get a flat tire on a nice day when I’m wearing old clothes when it’s located under the vehicle.

 

I have been doing research for when I travel to Alaska, as I do not want to meet a Brown bear with just a knife.

I worked in the Yukon in the late 1970s and early 80s doing field work in the Aishihik valley, which at the time had the highest grizzly bear population in North America. I saw bears from helicopters all the time, but on the ground, I never observed one. I asked the Game Branch bear biologist if I should carry a gun, and he said to do whatever was comfortable for me, but unless I was a really good shot under pressure, and/or really lucky, my safest bet would be to carry a whistle. A really sharp, high powered life guard whistle. So, that’s what I did. It was a lot easier to carry than a gun, and I never doubted it would work. Animals generally avoid humans, unless they’re provoked or frightened.
And, I’m not anti gun. I’ve hunted and been around guns all my life.

 

Then maybe both would be called for, if the whistle doesn’t work then a slug from a 12ga. might. But avoidance would make me the happiest. I only want to shoot them with my DSLR.

 

It takes a lot of discipline when you’re carrying a gun not to make it the solution.
