4runner vs the new Ford bronco

what do you all think about the upcoming Ford bronco ? Do you think that it will take away 4runner enthusiasts??

I'm brand agnostic. I've overlanded in Nissans, Jeeps, and Toyotas. The Bronco looks like it was engineered to "beat the Wrangler," full stop. On paper it's very impressive -- strong turbo-6, lockers, swaybar disconnect, etc.

The issue is always: How well do those systems integrate in the field, and are they reliable? Both of these are huge and unanswered for the Bronco. Jeeps may be unreliable, but they tend to break in predictable ways and people know how to fix them. The new Bronco, with these complicated engines, new drivetrain, and highly complicated integrated electronics? Who knows?

Whenever someone says they're interested in the new Bronco, I always think: "You first!"

We should know a lot more in 3-4 years, once they've been ridden hard and put away wet.

If I did have the resources to purchase a new vehicle. (Ya right) I would buy an American vehicle, prob a Ford.....

 

Have only seen silhouettes and nobody has driven it, so too early to answer Q1

If I'm going to base it off photos, I think it looks really good. Also, if the aesthetics and features of the "Warthog" come close to what they did with the "Raptor" as a finished product and is competitively priced, Toyota and Jeep better wake up!

 

I agree. I'm guessing the higher end Bronco shares similarities to a compact F-150 and the smaller motor is similar to what is standard in the Ranger.

 

This is the correct response. I chose a 4Runner because it fit my needs (minivan capacity, offroad chops, daily and grocery hauler, reliability). Not because I'm a weirdo brand loyalist. When someone makes a better vehicle that fits my needs, I'll seriously consider it. Chill out fanboys. Full lockers, swaybar disconnect, stick shift with a crawler gear... Sounds like a riot to me.

 

I chose my 4runner because it was the only vehicle in it's class and wanted it to KICKASS!!! It's deficiencies were glaring and took a small fortune to remedy them. Toyota ought to be ashamed for calling weird paint colors and an ugly roof rack or basket as something dedicated to PRO performance or Adventure. There's no bigger loyalist than a Toyota owner. How else can they get away with selling us the same base crap, year after year, creating 3-4 levels of a virtually identical wagon, all while their COGS drops?

I have been a Toyota guy most of my life. But, I would buy a Ford, etc, if there was something I really wanted. I've actually been considering a Nissan 370Z as my next purchase.

I might go check these out when they're available just for grins. I'm sure the salesperson would jump at the opportunity to convert a Toyota guy. if nothing else, it might make me appreciate the 4runner more. Or, maybe I'll end up on a Ford forum in a few years

 

Why? You wouldn't drive around with the lockers engaged, or the sway bars disconnected. I imagine you would just skip the crawler gear in regular driving.

By the time, you've done that to a truck, it's hardly a daily driver and you're throwing reliability out the window. When I think of those options, I'm envisioning a truck with a serious lift on at least 35s. As they say, the more modified the vehicle, the more problems to introduce. Definitely not a family car, but to each their own.

 

Not since they pledge Millions to Defund the Police They were MY last hope if,IF I were to buy an 'American " made vehicle!! Where are they being produced?? Mexico??? Hell the Tacoma's & Tundra's are made here in the USA! I KNOW the 4Runners Are NOT just like FJ's Toyota wants to keep their eyes on the quality Just like Honda Motorcycle will NOT let Tadda's baby CBR100RR/CBR600RR line out of Japan!

 

Considering the last Ford Bronco was in 1996, and was preceded by the infamous 4-banger Bronco II 30 years ago, it's going to take a lot to bring that vehicle back from the dead. Bronco fans have been lamenting its demise for decades, with plenty of rumors, but no actual vehicle to date to replace it.

 

It should be better for reliability than the new Defender, and look how far that brand got by the time it was introduced. At least Fords are real. I’ve owned Ford 4x4’s and they were great. At least the frames don’t rust out. Yeah, I’d buy a new Bronco, but I’m going to really try to make a Cyber Truck my next purchase and move away from ICE technology and get into the 21st century. The new Bronco will be a marketing success, but it won’t be new.

It's cool it can be optioned with 285 70 17s from factory. They will sell to the mall crawlers like me. I had the 2.7 engine in a f150 with 35s. Never saw under 20mpg

 

I'm mainly into reliability at this point in life. I've proven all I have to prove as far as fixing cars. Time will tell of course, but I just don't see a Ford going as long as our Runners without some real shop time.

 

It definitely has a cool look. Kind of the same reaction I had when the FJ Cruiser came out!! Still, hard to get past the history of crappy American cars for me. The Explorer was on our short list when we bought our 2020, and despite the turbo (which was a blast!!!), I'm so glad we went 4Runner!! This thing has just destroyed in all of the outdoor locations we've gone so far, w/ no fears regarding reliability.

Actually getting one will be another year though.

I'm interested to check it out. Almost no chance of me buying one, but it looks BA as fuck.

Just reading some leaked, alleged, specs and options on a Bronco forum. Pretty cool. A Jeep like vehicle with Ford heritage and dependability. It will be hard for any off road enthusiast not to like this vehicle. Check off all the performance options you can think of, 35” tires, and about 15 combinations and permutations for tops and you can get the picture. I’m looking forward to seeing it next week! All us Toyota guys can dig the colour selection too.

Overall, I think it looks OK. But, the grill looks cheesy. I'm not loving the fender flares, either.

 

Of course, initial emotional response is important, I agree, Thatbassguy. But this vehicle is designed to be so adaptable and will generate so many after market conversions, that you can make it into anything you desire. Options like a 7 speed manual transmission will appeal to a small sub set of die hards, as will the availability of 35” tires and e locking front and rear diffs. The aesthetics are just the superficial expression of a vehicle like this. It’s going to be interesting!

 

Oh, yeah. It sound totally awesome! The ability to fit 35's without hacking the shit out of it is VERY appealing to me. I'll have to see it in person before I really make up my mind.

Edit: I wonder if this will have any effect on the next generation 4runner. There's times I wonder why the hell I'm chopping up a $40K truck to fit 33's when I could just trade in for a Wrangler and run 37's.
