My dad and I were replacing the clutch this weekend. While we were putting the new pilot bearing in, I inspected the inside of the bell housing and saw what looked like a fluid leak through the transmission bearing retainer plate. I took it off and made my weekend suck a whole lot more. It seems that the bearing for the counter shaft melted and ripped itself apart. It also looks like it damaged the casing around the bearing. It's clear that we can't put this back on, but what I'm wondering is what my options are. Is it likely that there's too much damage to the casing for a rebuild? If I got a rebuilt transmission, would they even accept this as a core? Any thoughts?

Herbie rocks ! Like your screen name. That looks bad man, bummer. I’d just put the plate on and use it as a core without saying much.

That looks bad. Just do what bthp said. Plate back on. No need to say what damage there is.

Looks like you need new main shaft / jack shaft bearings.

Anyone have recommendations for where to get a new/rebuilt trans? I was looking at Marlin Crawler unless there's better options out there.

As a cottage industry Marlin has the best knowledge about gearing and shaft loading and metallurgy. His companies crawler kits are second to none for super low range t-case gearing solutions. If you can spring for his transmission rebuild service it will be money well spent. But if the core is junk then your core refund/deposit will be adjusted.
