Last week we purchased a new 2020 T4R OPR and love the vehicle. It now has about 500 miles on it and yesterday we took a drive on the freeway from Tucson to Eastern AZ. I noticed consistently when I would set the cruise between 75-80, it would shift from 5th to 4th and hold 4th gear for extended periods of time while on flat terrain. If I turned the cruise control off, it would shift back into 5th gear and would hold 75-80 without shifting back down. Has anyone else seen the adaptive cruise do this? Thanks.

That's just regular cruise, not an adaptive element issue.

I've had a handful of 4Runners and Tacomas, they tend to want to hold cruise downshifts too long. Not sure if there's a software flash with the 4Runners like there was with the Tacomas, but worth asking about it. It will likely be in the form of a TSB.

Thanks for the info. I’ll check on the TSB.

Negative on other vehicles. I was out in the clear when it did this. On a positive note, the adaptive part of the cruise control worked great in traffic. It was very smooth with both deceleration and acceleration.

Just a tap on the gas petal will make it upshift as well.

One other thing I noticed yesterday was when I’d set the cruise at 75 and apply a little gas to move around slower vehicles with the cruise still engaged, it would start shifting back and forth between 4th and 5th gears about every 2-4 seconds until either I let off the accelerator or disengaged the cruise. Is that unusual for these?

That's odd. Mine shifts every time if reved up in fourth with cruse on with the lightest tap of the accelerator. I thought it must be by design within the software.

My wife's (2017) Rav4 did that too.. I nearly even had an accident because I made a quick pass to the vehicle from my right side(slow traffic), then quickly steered back to the right side because there was a car in front of me.. I had to attempt to turn the steering wheel 3 times until it engaged. Somehow when the safety sense is on, it wont let you make an immediate turn unless you make turn the indicator signal first which was counter intuitive because there was no time to do it. I have since disabled that feature.
