The new Pioneer is in! I don’t have much to review on it yet because it’s so new and the menu system is extensive.

    A few install tips:
    1. The little blue wire on the antenna adapter needs to be connected to the switched amp power lead (blue/white). The 5th gen 4Runner has an amplified antenna and it needs power to receive signal.
    2. The Metra dash kit seems flimsy if you don’t modify the factory metal brackets to work with the new head unit. All you have to do is grind off the alignment nubs on each bracket and add an additional hole to the bracket for everything to mount back in place.
    E736A918-75CE-4876-825E-FD891D69BD32.jpg
Shown here is the right side bracket. The process of events is to place the Metra “L” shape brackets on the new head unit, secure with one countersink screw (you can see that single countersink screw at the top of the metal bracket in the pic).

Once each Metra bracket is mounted to the sides of the new head unit, place it in the top of the main dash piece and push it all the way back until it snaps in place.

Drill a similar size hole 0.5” back (center point to center point measurement) from the original hole on each factory metal bracket at the top (refer to pic again). Mount each factory metal bracket.

Test fit in dash to ensure proper fit. I had to loosen the metal brackets and adjust a little to get the Metra dash kit to sit flush in the dash.

I am very happy with this 9” screen. It fits the space perfectly. The 10” version would feel a little out of place in the available space with the limited mounting options. Everyone knows what carplay looks like so here are a few more pics of home screen and widgets.

Does this headunit need a separate SiriusXM adapter?

2hr drive tonight. I really like this head unit. It’s responsive and operates cleanly.

I noticed the screen was still quite bright, even after it auto dims when the headlights are turned on. The dimmer brightness adjustment is not in the menu under “dimmer settings” where you would expect it. The actual dimmer brightness is located under “picture adjustment”.
To set it turn on headlights, screen auto dims, then go to picture adjustment in settings. Now click dimmer and set night time brightness to your liking.

I have non-JBL but it should fit yours also. There may be an additional wiring harness to make it work but they have all that figured out well these days. Crutchfield.com is a very helpful place to check compatibility.

Thank, i will take a look, because the jbl have more speaker and a sub, and i don’t know if the amplifier is in the headunit or separate.

Thanks for the informative post! I just purchased this unit to put in my 2017 TRD Pro. After watching countless videos, the items that are needed for the install are:
    1) Maestro RR module
    2) Metra 99-8227CHG Dash Kit
    3) Metra 40-LX11 Antenna Adapter
    4) AXXESS AX-TOYUSB adapter (in order to retain factory USB functionality) - (Does your stock USB/AUX port on the lower right side of the dash work if you have this piece?)
    5) Maestro TO2 harness - (in order to retain factory steering wheel controls)
    6) Mini HDMI to HDMI cable for phone screen mirroring

Would you suggest any other harness, adapters, etc.?

The unit I purchased was an open-box item and was missing the bluetooth mic and the USB-C extension cable. For an OEM USB-C extension cable, sellers on eBay are wanting $50 for it. Is this cable necessary to have? I still am able to charge my iPhone via USB-A to Lightning cable. My thought is, I would only really be missing out on the 'fast charging' that the USB-C cable would bring to the table. Do you use it for any other functionality? If the AX-TOYUSB allows you to retain the USB/AUX ports on the lower part of the dash, I would still have USB-A to update firmware on the head unit via flash drive, right?

Any help with those questions would be greatly appreciated! Also, it has been a year, how are you liking the set up today?

The only thing I would have liked to try is the adapter that makes the factory gps antenna work. (Supposedly)

The head unit is still great. I believe it is the best looking one for this application. I’m not a stereo nut so this head unit does everything I need and much more. The wireless CarPlay is great.

Funny that you say that, I think you are referring to the Maestro SAT-TO2 adapter that supposedly utilizes the factory GPS antenna and satellite radio. I bought that accessory and just set up a return for it because I couldn't find the article/video/etc. where it said I needed that. LMAO! Might just end up keeping it after all. :) Thank you for your response!

I recommend installing a front camera since you have two camera inputs. I may be wrong, but i have the 10.1 inch version and it had 2 inputs and I added the function of using the front or rear camera with the up arrow of the steering wheel. Just a thought!

I went with the 10 inch screen, and it’s really big. I didn’t want to have buyer’s remorse, but the 7600 looks great.

When deciding i cut cardboard to the size of each screen and held it in place to decide which size fit better for my liking.

Can you post some daytime photos? maybe also some from further away?

I am on the fence still... I KNOW I don't like the Alpine Halo units.. the Pioneers look very sleek and available in 2 sizes. The larger size blocks the vents to much imo.. It might not be a functional problem, but visually it looks weird.

I wish someone would make a T9/T10 type unit that wasn't such a software hack job... I NEED SiriusXM and CarPlay without jumping through hoops..

I went through the same thought process/concerns and gave the Dasaita unit a try since they’re so popular on Tacomaworld.

check out my initial review here. Video to come soon:
    https://www.4runners.com/threads/dasaita-android-headunit-installed.20304/

Quick edit - the pioneer units are legit. If I have any Dasaita issues, this will be the route I go. Just wanted to try the OEM look first

Here are some pics of the 8600. It’s big, but if you go with the bottom slot, it works.

Awesome! Thank you. that thing is huge! I see what you mean about mounting it lower. It looks like it blocks the HVAC controls slightly.

I still think if I go this route I’ll go 9”.

    anyhow it looks cool.

Might just be the camera angle but is the left side a little lower than the right? angle looks a little off.
