Well, in that case the Exterminators Choice Rodent Defense is working like a charm - my experiment is a grand success. It seems to be holding the hordes of indigenous NM rodents at bay.

I have been to southern AZ many times .. loads of rodents...snakes love rodents...
were I live I did not see any rats but what I call squirrels wooded rats with a bushy tail..ya they do chew up everything.. even my house.if I see more than 2 in my property then I kill them .. last 2 years I killed 24 ..but I do not dump them in the trash or in the ground.. I put them in a spot in my woods then the predators eat them .. foxes/coyotes/hawks etc..

We have a lot of squirrels and chipmunks under our bird feeders and they’ve never been a problem.

We do have coyotes around. I've even seen them walking on our block fence from time to time. Maybe them being around is why I don't see any mice.

Wires are repaired! I went ahead and bought a soldering iron and was planning on redoing the connectors but unfortunately I got a cordless one thinking it would be easier to work with...but it doesn’t get hot enough. Was able to do one connector by soldering/heat shrink. I redid the other connectors with weatherproof heat shrink butt splices. DO NOT BUY CORDLESS SOLDERING IRONS LOL

also thanks for all the suggestions! I sprayed febreze in my engine bay as a temporary repellent. I’m gonna try that spray as well as the electronic device in the future for sure.

2 of my neighbors have bird feeders [IMO rodent feeders] so the hawks focus in on the little birds and have a meal..I also have herds of turkeys on my land. when they see me the run and gobble ..
this is a 4runner owner with rodent wiring damage
I STARTED THE 4RUNNER AND NOTICED THAT A FEW OF THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON (ABS, BRAKE, & A FEW OTHERS I CAN'T REMEMBER). I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT ANYWAY TO RUN SOME ERRANDS (SHORT DISTANCE), AND NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY EITHER (NOT GOING INTO ECO MODE AND STRUGGLING TO REACH 40 MPH). I DECIDED TO PULL OVER INTO A PARKING LOT AND CHECK UNDER THE HOOD. THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED A SQUIRREL NESTED BY THE DRIVER'S SIDE FIREWALL. '''THE SQUIRREL''' ALSO USED THE INSULATION FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND ALONG THE FIREWALL TO MAKE ITS NEST. I TOOK THE 4RUNNER TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THEY ALSO POINTED OUT THAT ONE OF THE ELECTRIC RUNS WAS CHEWED ALL THE WAY THROUGH WITH SOME DAMAGE ON THE MAIN HARNESS. I LET THEM KEEP THE 4RUNNER OVER NIGHT TO GET AN ESTIMATE ON THE DAMAGE. THE INITIAL ESTIMATE WAS FOR $5,716.30. I DECIDED TO LET THEM KEEP THE 4RUNNER UNTIL THE WORK WAS COMPLETED. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ELECTRIC HARNESS WOULD TAKE 3 TO 5 DAYS TO BE SHIPPED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEN I WAS NOTIFIED (6 DAYS LATER) THAT THE ELECTRIC HARNESS WAS NOT READILY AVAILABLE AND WOULD TAKE ANOTHER WEEK BEFORE THEY RECEIVE IT. I RECENTLY RECEIVED A PHONE CALL SAYING THAT ALL THE PARTS WERE IN, BUT NOW THEY WOULD EITHER HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENGINE OR RAISE THE BODY TO INSTALL THE FIREWALL INSULATION. SO AN ADDITIONAL $2,219.66 FOR THAT PORTION OF IT. SURE MY INSURE PICKED UP THE TAB LESS MY DEDUCTIBLE, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I DROPPED THE 4RUNNER OFF MARCH 7, 2017 AND WAS INFORMED THAT IT SHOULD BE READY AROUND APRIL 5TH. HOPEFULLY NOTHING ELSE IS FOUND.

I PURCHASED THE 4RUNNER BRAND NEW ON FEBRUARY 4, 2017 (DRIVEWAY KEPT). I TRADED IN A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA THAT I HAD FOR 11 YEARS THAT SAT OUTSIDE FOR THIS HEADACHE. MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE TACOMA. THE 4 RUNNER ONLY HAD APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS INCONVENIENCE HAPPENED.

Hi, did you fix the problem finaly?

I'm in the same process now, rats had chew the connector of the cylinder 4 fuel inyector, so I will have to replace the connector. Could you tell me how difficult is to remove th air intake surge tank? what else have you replaced? is the rubber gasket reusable?

Thank you very much, any help is very wellcome

yes it’s been fixed. It isn’t hard to remove intake parts. It’s just a matter of putting things back the way you took it off. I reused the gasket. Just take your time and you’ll be fine good luck!

    Is plasti-dip a mod?!
I use fluid film on the underside of my vehicle as well as the engine bay. I have critters around everywhere, never an issue with chewed wires. I guess nothing likes greasy feet, lol.

Who wants a snake skin to lay in there? I still think a potent repellent can be made from snake poop.....

Currently dealing with this on my 19. I woke to a misfire on cylinder #4. I had just washed the engine the previous day and though maybe water got into a spark plug tube. After work I went started troubleshooting and saw the chewed wiring through under the upper intake manifold. I dropped it off at the dealer to see what they say (hoping they cover it:rofl:) but I'm a little worried that I found it after maybe an hour of diagnosing and the dealer hasn't found it after having it for a day.
