I got a 2019 TDR Off Road earlier this year and love it. I hate the stock rims that come on it and am looking to upgrade. Are there any words of advice on what to look for when choosing a rim such as bead lock or would running standard rims like the TDR one do just fine on and off the road? I spend about 80% of the time on road but am looking to explore Colorado and Utah once a build is complete.

Are you planning on doing some rock crawling or high speed desert runs? If not you won’t need bead locks. Aside from that, spend some time reading on here and looking at peoples builds to get an idea of what you want your 4runner to look like. Plenty of options. No reason why the wheels you have no won’t work off road.
I went with -38mm offset on my wheels as I wanted a wider stance and it also improved my handling.

Non bead lock will be just fine. Wheel fitment will depend a lot on your plans for lift/tire size. Stay with a 0 to -12 offset.

Most of the beadlocks that you see are fake beadlocks.

I don't even think real beadlocks are street legal, but maybe that's just a CA thing.

    Anyways, don't get fake beadlocks.

Also, as you go more and more negative on the offset, you will need to trim more in the front wheel well.

Your stock rims are fine, there are other things to do with that $1000 bucks. Toyota usually puts good effort into their rims (weight, durability). While some rigs look good with wheels with a wide stance, its not that practical. Rocks get flipped up onto the windshield more, mud covers your rig (great for a pic) but unrealistic when every time you touch your rig your muddy when your camping or something. That said, I'll reiterate what someone said before me and check to see what you want to build it into first. I think everyone in here has stories of shit they did and realized it wasn't what they wanted - bumpers before suspension, giant wheels without re-gearing, leveling kits, etc.

That vehicle is extremely capable in stock form. My advise, Skip the wheels and bead locks, get AT tires that will fit without mods (I think 275/70/17) then get some rock rails (about $1k), and maybe a skid plate and go out and explore. You can get very far with that.

The stock rims are high quality off road wheels. They have a special little place to protect the valve stem when you’re off road. Not many after market wheels have that design feature. When you say “upgrade” I’m curious what could be an upgrade. There are a lot of cheap chinesium wheels out there that are a downgrade, though.

Yeah true beadlocks aren't street legal for safety reasons.

The stock wheels you have are the widest stock wheels you can get. They're a good wheel..but if you hate them you hate them. Powder coating really isn't an option since you don't have spare set, but they do look sweet powder coated.

If you really do not like the stock ones, get the gray TRD's. They would look good on your rig.

No valve stem protection, but that’s not a big deal, they look good and are high quality at least. Narrower, and a slight downgrade from OR stock wheels.

I know all to well with the Tacoma I had. Not to mention the mint 88 pickup I SAS’d. Just wasn’t into cutting the 4Runner.

Dude thanks! I really like the stock rims. And I am looking for the best tires to install for overlanding. You answered several of my questions in this thread. :)
