Does he take after mom or dad? Who's eyes does the pup have?
I love dogs, when I became allergic was one of the saddest days of my life.

Very handy to have. My wife and I have been missed by a few roof avalanches.

Just returned home from a ten mile bike ride with my son.

Big deal right? Well, it kind of is....

My son Dave is 24 years old with Autism and Mental Retardation. He is a great person and super friendly and knows everyone in the community because he is always saying (yelling) "Hi" and "How are you?" and "What's your name?" and "Have a great day!"

When he was a kid he was tall and skinny as a rail. Now that he is grown, he is still tall but getting some pretty good girth. As a kid he used to ride his bike around the front of the house all the time and when he was 16 I bought him a new beach cruiser. He rode it a couple times and then was effectively DONE with bicycles. So a few weeks ago he was out front with me while I was riding around and I asked him if he wanted to ride. He said yes, I gave him my helmet and he IMMEDIATELY took off smiling. He was having a great time. So..... I pulled the trigger and purchased a Redline RL275 adult BMX bike for him, and a new helmet.

Since we got the bike I have taken him out a few times and my goal with the single speed bikes is always to ride at least ten miles. First couple of times he just flat out faded. I had to swing by the house and drop him off so I could finish the ride. Well, the last few times he has made the distance NO problem. Plus, what's even more important, is his enthusiasm. I mentioned a bike ride yesterday and as soon as he woke up today he started talking about it. During our ride, he hung right with me the entire time and in fact, I know we both could have ridden farther than the ten mile goal.

This will not end when "lock down" ends either. He has lost some of his services due to a lack of staffing so I know we will be the two amigos/musketeers at least a few times a week from here on out and we will be riding and hopefully getting in shape and bonding.

    Good stuff. :)

That is awesome. You sound like a great dad. I also love to bike but due to wrist issues with my hands going numb I am not able to make big miles. 8 to 10 is it for me. I have tried numerous different handlebars, stems, gloves, and grips but cannot get rid of the numbness. I am thinking my core muscles are weak and am working on strengthening those but I don't know. Keep on riding.

I was having that issue as well. Yesterday I rode my Salsa Timberjack 15 miles (alone) and noticed how comfortable I was on the bike. So I really paid attention to the position and feel of everything. Today with my son, I was on my Surly Lowside and whenever I finish a ride on that bike my arms hurt and my hands get numb. Today I noticed that the front of my seat was angled down just a bit and I was pushing with my arms to hold myself back onto the seat. We stopped and I made an adjustment. Test rode and adjusted again. Then we took off and rode for a while and I stopped and made one more adjustment. I basically moved the seat forward slightly, like 1/4" and raised the front just a bit and WOW, what a different. Way.... more comfortable. I was looking to pick up some of those Ergo grips but I don't think I am going to need them now.

    Stay healthy.

Thanks for the tip with the seat. I do notice I slide forward just a bit when I ride so I will try those tips.

    Excellent, "Good stuff, Great Stuff",
I am so proud of you and your boy. I am hoping he is interested in going shopping with you and out in the desert or mountains. Do you let him drive on straight wide dirt roads? I have worked with a couple autistic young adults and children. When they get the right focus they can be very helpful and a bunch of fun to work with. My friends at the auto parts and hardware store enjoy when I bring him around. Summer is here so I better get to walking and shedding my winter fat.

I let my daughter drive on wide straight dirt roads. It takes nerves of steel, great reflexes and awareness. I have taken pictures and put them in her picture book and birthday cards. My daughter has been learning how to find and read sign. My wife is learning also, she asked me to teach her a month or so back.
We have a couple special needs adult children. My, whoops, our son is 28 years old. As our pastor said he would follow me anywhere. For him, if I am with him it is a great day.
When we go shopping I push him around in his chair and tell about everything as I shop. I ask him which one he wants and he grins, puts on his thinking face and reaches toward one. He grins and giggles and we have a great time. My wife and daughter start at the other side of the store and we meet somewhere in the middle. They goes to check out and we finish the tour. Being retired makes life easier and better for all of us.
Tomorrow we are going to a desert stream, a lot of rains this year and the groundwater is still seeping. Found black sand there so one day we will go panning. We are going to a ring of cottonwoods to have a picnic. I made a lemongrass stuffed chicken and the leftovers I will make into sandwiches. The ground is fairly hard so it will not be too difficult pushing his wheelchair around and telling him what is out there. You may have guessed, he has severely impaired vision along with retardation. We are blessed by having great loving children.
A pistol will be on my side just in case some reptiles or coyotes want to get friendly or I sneak up on them by accident.

Good news! Im still employed. Though not working and am collecting UI benefits. But that means I have spent this girls first 3 months at home and am loving it. I miss working but you can’t put a price on bonding time.

Pretty much yes to all of that. I had Dave riding a dirt bike in the back yard at 4-1/2. He rode every day. I used it to teach him to get dressed. He would get up in the morning and come down the hall saying motor motor. OK buddy, go get dressed. He would go to his room and come back with his shirt on inside out and backwards, underwear backwards and all kinds of messed up but he got dressed. I'd straighten him out and he'd ride and ride and ride. On our desert trips I literally had to stand in front of him to get him to stop to come into the RV for lunch.

Not use those were not the BEST times of our lives. Over the years he got BIGGER. He broke 6 feet years ago and he weights over 230 pounds. So at some point I started to discourage him from riding a dirt bike and encourage him to enjoy riding in the Suzuki Samurai and later the Jeep. When he was small, if he hit the ground he would bounce right up. At his current size, he can easily break bones and that is not an injury he needs. He drove both the Samy and Jeep out in the desert. But you are right, it is scary. Dave can see OK with this glasses but he gets so proud that he turns his head to me in the passenger seat and just looks at me, not where he is going.

I am currently working on a baja bug that we will use for adventures. As you know, it is easy to go on and on about out kids with extra challenges. God Bless, you sound like you are a great father as well.

    Good news and great news!
Packed up the family this morn and headed out. The desert crick still has water, looked like 3 inch long spotted trout.
We went to a galvanized shade structure some people had made. We walked around a bit, up a hill to the south, across and down, returned to picnic from west.
Put together some lemon grass chicken sandwiches and potato salad.
After eating we took my son for a walk. He loves the bumping ride in his wheel chair. My wife and daughter have learned to look for sign by second nature now. Hooray.
Hope y'all enjoying yourselves also. Just cause your guvnor wants everybody locked in place doesn't mean you cannot get out and enjoy yourselves while being isolated form others. Be safe and have fun.

She is a cutie. Watch that she doesn't take off following her nose every chance she gets. Beagles like to do that.

@Snickel Fritz I've been surprised how durable Rustoleum is. Acetone wipe down, 2 coats of primer and 3 or 4 top coats. Works pretty well and cheap for touch up. Although, you might want to take your lady out for some dinner soon. It is Friday night.....

It is indeed, thank you. I can sit out there and listen to the water for hours. It's also right outside our bedroom, so we hear that at night.
