I have a 2002 4Runner 4x4 SR5 I have a bad outer pinion bearing. However there are 2 choices 1 for a 6.7 inch ring, and 1 for a 8.8 inch ring. The only number I found are stamped on the pinion housing (bolted to the front of the differential) they are as follows:

    85140
    1Z5

Does anyone know how to determine the ring size? gear ratio?

any info will be a huge help. Thank you in advance for your time!!

Where are you getting that? 2002 4Runner has what's called the 8" rear diff (also called the "V6" or "turbo" diff), and the front is the 7.5 clamshell (different from the earlier 7.5's...). Ford has an 8.8" carrier, I don't know about the 6.7", that sounds tiny. Not sure what you're looking that at lists either of those as ring sizes for an '02 4Runner though?

Every parts house I call, looking for a pinion bearing, asks if the ring gear is 8.8 or 6.7. Even websites ask the same question. I just want to replace the outer pinion bearing and seal, not disassemble the the diff case to count teeth. I am calling the dealer tomorrow to see if they can shed any light on my question.

That's new to me, I don't know why they're asking you that but I'm not a gear guy. Hit up Zuk at http://gearinstalls.com/, he'll know.

Thank you for the info! The dealer gave me ratios only (3 possible choices) however, he said there should be a tag on the differential. One other helpful tip he gave me was if a tag is not present on the rear diff, look for a tag on the front diff because the part numbers and ratios are the same as the rear.

TAG NUMBERS / RATIO PER THE DEALER

    A04A - 4:30
    A03A - 4:10
The third option is not applicable.

Once I determine what I have I will post the info here. I hope this will help someone else!!
