Wow thank you. I just looked and have the Pittsburgh Automotive, 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands, part number 61197. To all, know that the color of the jack stand on the Consumer Affairs article has nothing to do with the recall because my jack stands are gray and model 61197.

I'm seeing that too, Paul - others are reporting that they are gray or silver, not red. I'd check the model number no matter what though.

I see some differences and why this should be a recall. I have 2 sets 61197(recall set) and another set 38847 don't know which ones are newer. The recall set looks older judging by the faded label. The base on the recall set is visibly smaller, the arm is visibly smaller, and the Pawls do seem smaller. To confirm here are the bases side by side and the arm from the 38847 will not fit in the 61197 base. So yea, not so good. I've trusted my life on many occasion over the years. SMDH EDIT: Admins this might be something that should get posted across all gen pages.

I'm sure there are several. Also, my local store had not heard about a rebate as of last week.

    What’s the problem?

This recall affects Pittsburgh Automotive 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands, part number 61197, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The ratchet teeth on affected jack stands may not sufficiently engage the pawl to a
sufficient depth, possibly causing the stand to fail under load, NHTSA said. If the stand fails, the stand can suddenly drop, increasing the risk of injury to persons nearby or under the lifted vehicle.

Harbor Freight is notifying registered owners and stores will provide a gift card equal to the shelf price of the jack stands, free of charge. Owners are asked to discontinue use of the recalled jack stands immediately.

Absolutely. My general rule for HF has always been this - if a tool's failure can injure/kill me, I don't buy it at HF. Screwdrivers, sockets, hammers, OK. Jack stands, spinning blades, things like that, no.

Yea totally agree. I'm lucky, been using 2 sets of these for years. Never had any issues once I set the truck down and I felt OK with their placement, but.....I'm damn lucky. I will keep them around to hold parts or whatever smaller items I can use them on, but I will never crawl under a vehicle supported by them ever again. SMDH.

I posted this on another forum, but I only use pin-style stands. In fact, the ones I use are 22 ton and designed for forklifts. They're not cheap and are heavy as hell, but I feel better crawling under my trucks and cars with these:

So have any of you guys gotten your HF gift card/store credit for returning the 61197 6ton jack stands? My local store will not take them until I receive an email recall notice from HF corporate so I can bring to the store as proof. I call the HF corporate customer service line and they said they will send out the official recall notice email (to bring to the store) once the stay home shelter has been lifted to prevent people from leaving their house. I told the customer service rep that my local store is open from 8am to 6pm so why can’t I just bring them in? She said I would have to wait for the official email that is on file with purchase item receipt.

Mine are from 2001, different model number, and never been an issue for me. But I'd hate to have a problem with them and always liked the pin-thru design better.

Nope, just walked in with them in my hand. They asked if I got an email and I said yes because the recall bulletin was posted on the wall behind the counter. Seems they are aware there are going to be returns.
