I’m about to purchase a 2002 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition. The current driver works for Lexus and had the truck diagnosed and it came back with 9k worth of repairs that included replacing the engine. I’m looking for alternative. She’s asking 1k which I don’t mind paying but haven’t done so as it doesn’t pass emissions as it sits and the title is in her fathers name. (He’s out of the country at the moment). So once’s he’s back I’ll make the purchase and have the title transferred in to my name. In the photos it should show what they found.

I have no problem piecing this together as I still have a daily to use.

It cranks, it just shakes when running.

    any help is greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't do it! For the money it's going to take to get it running good again, you could spend a couple thousand more and get a good looking and running 4runner. Now unless your looking for a project car and you already have a daily driver, that's a different story. $9,000 in repairs is outrageous though.

I don’t mind the project. I’ve always wanted an suv like this. I wasn’t expecting this particular one but she’s a good friend and I told her about a year or so ago that if she ever decides to sell her truck to let me know first and she did.

For $1k...you aren't getting a bad deal. You can make your money back parting it out.

However, to keep it, you will sink way more into it than it is worth unless you can do this work yourself.

I would pull the head on it and see what is going on. If you don't actually have to replace the engine...but rebuild a head...then things look a whole lot better.

yes I’ve got a good friend with a shop and will work from there. I’m going to simply rebuild what’s there. I expect to have things fully functional after 6-8 months.

better to get a second opinion. 9,000 really? Depending on your emissions, get another engine for way less. Or maybe could be stupid like o2 sensors and a coil pack with wires.

I definitely don’t intend on using the dealership. This was a diagnostic that she paid for in an effort to keep it. As it’s too much for her she’s deciding to sell it to me. I am going to piece this together over the next few months. I wanted to know if anyone has done such a project before. Previous posts recommended I break it down and repair from there. This is what I will do. I’ll keep everyone updated.
