So I don't like the fact I cant charge my phone while the truck is off. So I decided on a mod that would enable all power outlets to be always on.

First I found the power outlet relay under the hood in the fuse box.

I pull it out and grab a small flat head screwdriver.

Next I pop off the relay cover with the flat head screwdriver.

See where the flathead screwdriver is poking at? There is a little spring/magnet there. Normally, it will be open. If I stick the screwdriver in there I can "swing" the spring/magnet to close onto a contact.
You need to lift that little spring/magnet thing and slide something non conductive there so that the circuit is always closed.

I wedged a piece of non conductive material in there to keep the relay on at all times. Don't worry, it wont catch on fire. Ive had this mod in my Tacoma and camry for a few years already.

    Hello @ramonortiz55,
That is a great tech mod, but I only have the one on my center lower console. How would I go about that fix on my 96 SR5?

Is this any better/safer than creating a jumper wire to do the same?

Awesome...thank you kindly!! I'm very excited about this. I'm with you...yes, a jumper wire would do the same...but I like to have a nice clean look.

If you would, could you please PM me your address and I'll have it in the mail to ya tomorrow.

    I appreciate it...

I have to congratulate you on this for trying it yourself!! I was a big fat chicken and sent mine off to @ramonortiz55 and had him do mine. I'm very cautious on anything to do with electricity...12volt DC or AC!!

After reading your post...I went out to the shop and following the direction on here...I opened up my relay to see it in person. Now after seeing Ramon's handy work...I more understand what yall did. I now feel confident I could do this myself! It truly isn't that difficult...after you know what you're doing...lol!!

Just wanted to say thank you to both of yall. Ramon for actually do this mod for me...but also @W3LCH for giving me that little push I needed to try it on my own (I know you weren't attempting to do this...but your post got me excited to try it on my own)

    Have a great weekend guys...

That is great and something I am thinking about doing, but does it have any affect on the battery? If plugged in for too long will it kill the battery?

Only if you have an item pluged in that's using power. Example:charging your iPhone or running your ARB refrigerator. Once everything is disconnected...then there's no draw on the battery.

After re-reading your question...I believe you're asking if the modified relay itself is drawing power...the anwser is no. Once the mod is done to the relay, plug it back into the fuse box, secure the lid and forget about it! The modified relay will not draw any electricity/power on its own.

    I hope I anwsered your question?!? Sorry...it's late :) !!!

Thats good to know, thanks fornthe reply, but isn't the point of having it "always hot" to be able to use it when the car isn't running? If you leave your phone plugged in is it gonna kill the battery?

Charging your phone will not use enough power to kill your 4Runner's battery...unless maybe if you left it plugged in for several days or weeks without starting your 4Runner.

Thanks bud! I am glad you saw and learned. This same concept works for ALL cars.
Before you do it on your other vehicles, do some research.
    Why?
In my camry the same relay powers the outlets AND radio. So if I do this mod, I can play my radio and power my phone at the same time while my camry is off, keys out of ignition.

I decided not to do this on the camry because I was afraid I would leave the radio on.

    Have you tried it? :D

I don't know what it was, It was a tour helicopter ride over mt st Helens in Washington state. I wish I knew to fly helicopters

If its JUST a phone, not it wont kill your battery. Trust me. When I was growing up, my 1993 ford ranger and my fathers 1985 ford Taurus had always on power outlets from the factory. I would always leave my phone charging in the car for hours at a time. Sometimes overnight. Never had an issue

    It wont. see reply above
    this ^^

I have been debating doing this what type of non conductive material did you use ? i.e. Small piece of cardboard ,piece of electrical tape .

I used a sliver of plastic.

I grabbed a bottle cap from a bottle of water. cut a sliver off the cap edge.
