How long will a 5th Gen 4runner last?

I am looking to buy a 2014-2018 4Runner sr5 for college, and my ideal milage range would be under 55k miles. I have seen quite a few in the price range with roughly 80-90k miles and I am considering pulling the trigger and buying one with 90k miles or so. Assuming that the previous owner did all required maintenance and didn't ride it too hard, how long can I expect a used 5th Gen 4Runner to last me? All input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

If maintenance was performed on the recommended timeline, it should last 300k and more.

I sold my 4th gen 2004 limited in 2018 with 250k+ and it was smooth as silk. So 14yrs was good. Sold it to a college kid.

I would expect the 5th gen would yield the same amount of years.

It will last as long as you maintain it.

I bought a new 85 Toyota Hilux, put 300,000+ miles on before I sold it to buy an 03 Tacoma 4x which now has 250,000+ miles and still going.

    Here’s a post I made on a different thread ...

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. That’s the key. Do it “by the book” whether you think it needs it or not (oil, coolant, trans fluid, gear oil, brake fluid, filters, etc).

Back in college (when Disco was king) I was a mechanic in the college motor pool. We changed oil on everything every 5000miles (easy to keep track of... 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, etc). We used Chevron 30w oil that came in a 55 gallon drum. Most of the cars had been donated to the college and were high mileage (in those days, an engine with 75,000 miles on it was considered “worn out”) so we had no idea what their maintenance history had been.

The Graduate Studies department bought two brand new 1976 Ford Pinto station wagons (believe it or not, they were orange) with V6 engines which we maintained. One day, a student returned one with a loud “clunk, clunk, clunk” coming from the engine. Sounded like a rod bearing had gone bad so, with over 100,000 miles on the V6, we pulled the engine and sent it to the machine shop to get rebuilt.

A couple days later, Marty the machinist called and asked “How often do you guys change the oil”? Uh oh. We went down to look at the damage. Marty showed us that there was hardly any wear on any of the parts. The manufacturer’s hone hash marks were still visible in the cylinder walls! Due to the regular maintenance, the engine was still in excellent condition. The problem had been that the student had hit the oil pan on a parking bumper which pushed the oil suction tube up so the crankshaft hit it every time itcame around.

So, like any good relationship, the more you put into it, the more you’ll get back, and your “honey” will be with you for the long haul.

I'll just reiterate what's been said so far. With maintenance, you'll get a lot of miles out of a 4runner. I bought my '03 used in '05 with 80K and drove it 12 years and traded it in, running excellent still, at 257K.

As long as you can keep the frame from rusting... About six months. Lol.

Just a thought but I'd buy a simple corolla/civic for the college years.

umm I have a 2000 4runner SR5 Manual, that i just drove in to work today. The car runs like it was when i got it. Except the interior and exterior paint needs some care.

Aiden, do you still have your '99?
If so, are there issues about it that you want to trade up to a 5th Gen.

You will get tired of it and want something else before it wears out.

I might have a part or two fail along the way but overall these are still pretty solid vehicles.

As Daytona Violet said an SUV would be more fun. It's hard to roundup the gang and a keg of suds in a Corolla!

Will it last as long as a 1st Gen..? :notsure:
We'll have to check back in 2052.

Long, long time. Unless you bash it up. This island is full of old and new 4Runners, probably double any other vehicle. They are the survivors of the 4wd breeds.

Hard, but not impossible. But ya, I'd rather have the 'runner. My ride all through college (87-91) was a '79 Oldsmobile 98. That thing made many trips from Hattiesburg, MS to New Orleans crammed with drunk college kids (never behind the wheel though-we were oddly responsible about having a designated driver). Not the thread for reminiscing I know...but the memories just popped up
