Aux fuse box DIY

What are people doing for this to hook up all accessories?

Thanks for sharing! Obviously being a dual battery setup this has a lot of extra items. Is there something simple just if i want to add a few extra aux items onto the main (only) battery.

 

You can set the same type of fuse relay panel and set it up off a single battery. A lot of people go with Blue Sea fuse panels, I’m not a fan because they aren’t waterproof/sealed. Spod is another popular all in one easy option as well.

 

What exactly are you looking to add? Normally I just run off the battery with an in-line fuse, or tap into the interior fuse box with a wiring harness (I call them tap fuses, not sure what the real name is). I have also used preexisting wires for power, such as my DRLs amber markers for my grill lights so they power on with the amber markers (it's not a light bar, they are small amber lights). It all depends on what you're adding, how much you're adding, and how you want to use them.

 

well eventually ill have:

• compressor
• roof spot lights
• roof chase lights
• roof camping lights
• winch
• CB system
• etc.

Rather then running the main power wire from every item to the single positive terminal on the battery id like to add a separate box that has one main positive post.. and one main negative post from the battery.. and then 10 or so individual +/- that I run off of that.. I assume that's what the marine fuse box mentioned above would be good for?

I recently did this. Relays are fastened under the fuse box.

My HID headlights are straight to battery with inline fuses. Other stuff goes to the fusebox. I put a breaker close to battery that is rated slightly lower than max rating of the fuse box as a sort of redundant safety (80A & 100A).

CB is grounded to battery to reduce noise. All others grounded elsewhere. My relays are grounded behind fuse box instead of overcrowding the existing ground beside battery.

I highly recommend the braided PET sleeves plus heat shrink at ends to help protect wires from abrasion.

 

I built my own from parts off of Amazon. I did this for my 3rd Gen 4Runner, Dodge Ram and now my 5th gen. It has been working well for me and far cheaper than other ones. If you want I can take pictures of the set up on my 4Runner.

Just completed a fuse/relay block on my 18 Limited. Fabricated the panel from sheet metal (Home Depot) using a jig saw and vise to make the bends.

• Circuit Breaker: Bussmann Series 100 amp 285 Series Panel Mount
• Fuse Block: Blue Sea 5025 ST 5 Fuse Block
• Terminal Block: Blue Sea Model 2406
• Relays: Balkamp 40 amp 4 pin
• Relay Connectors: Grote (NAPA) 5 pin (5th pin wire is not used but is capped and tucked away under the panel in case a 5 pin relay is needed down the road.)
• Battery Cables and Lugs: 4 AWG and 1/4 inch BatteryCablesUSA
• Socket Cap Screws and Nylon Nuts: Everbilt metric (Home Depot)

These are very cool setups. I plan to put together something like this for my 4runner with a 6 fuse circuit and adding only a compressor and light bar to start. How waterproof or water resistant are these setups in the engine bay for those messy adventures or when you go to clean/detail the engine bay? Any particular fuse box and such I should use that is better than others for that?

 

The Blue Seas Fuse Block and Bussmann Circuit Breakers are not waterproof but the manufacturers do consider them "Weatherproof" or "water resistant." Both of the items I used are widely used in marine applications. For example, the fuse block has stainless steel screws and the cover and the circuit breaker has robust seals. Honestly don't see them as anymore risk than the OEM underhood electrical and electronic components. No issue with road/off road spray or moisture and if I need to clean the engine I simply cover as with other electronic/computer components.

I just use gentle spray of water to rinse silt away but do not spray directly into fuse slots.

 

Anyone have a good recommendation on a fuse box that can do a 40 AMP fuse? As I understand it, the ARB compressor (single or twin) comes with a 40 AMP fuse (2 fuses if twin), and I don't want to have that hanging off the battery. I want to put that into the auxiliary fuse box. Anyone done that? Or do these compressors just draw so much that it's recommended to keep them running directly off the batter?

 

Pretty much any fuse box can handle 40 amps. They will always say a max capacity for the panel, it’s rarely less than 100 amps. It doesn’t matter if it’s drawn directly off the battery or not, power is power. As long as the wire size is sufficient to carry the load over the distance you need without a big voltage drop you’re fine, fuse it as close to power source as possible and you’re good.

 

I should have specified 40 amp per circuit? The Blue Sea fuse box which everyone seems to love, has a 30 AMP limit per circuit. The ARB compressor comes with 40 amp in line fuses. I plan to build the auxiliary fuse box right on top of the oem box so it's super close to the battery.

 

In that case just run them off circuit breakers.

 

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean running the inline fuse off the circuit breaker? Or having a separate lower amperage circuit breaker for the compressor? My goal was to get rid of the inline fuses and h have everything within a fuse box after a main 80 AMP breaker.
