    Hello 4 runner community ! I had recently picked up an older 4Runner, it’s a second gen 1990, but a 2 door, w a sluggish 22re ! I’ve been daily driving it for a few months now and it’s starting to run very rich, I scoped around and decided to take a few things off and had noticed a reeeaaaal bad fuel smell coming from the intake manifold.

    Engine has about 260 on it, I am beginning to refresh it for health benefits by purchasing a master rebuild kit for it. Someone has mentioned to me that the injector seals might be shot. Or the cold start injector. Unsure of it but I’d be grateful if you could help me out.! Thank you !

    Wow, you have quite the unicorn on your hands.
    First off, you might have better luck getting this answered if you had posted it in the 2nd Gen TR4 Discussions forum. This particular forum doesn't get much traffic.

    To try and answer your question: You shouldn't smell raw fuel like that coming from the intake. The fuel injectors are easy enough to change and cheap. They are a wearing item. We are assuming you have no codes being thrown?
    O2 sensor could possibly cause it too. Sounds like the injectors though.

    Also an overhaul is probably your best bet. If it has been running rich a long time, the cylinders have been washed out and no longer have oil in them, thus lower compression. You might be using more oil than usual if this is the case, due to it being blown out the back. You might be able to just pick up a JDM 22re and swap it out.
