Another new person here with a question about air intakes.

I realize that some people want more horsepower or torque and some think any mod like this is a waste of money. Forgetting about money, horsepower etc., wouldn't it be better for the engine to breathe if you reduced the amount of restrictions for incoming air and maybe a medium flow exhaust system?

I would think that using a new air intake pipe but keep the main filter box with a higher flow air filter, not one that uses oil, and a Magnaflow type of muffler the motor could breathe better.

Curious what others think about this.

Welcome to the forum Gary, to some extent it does breath a little better.

    On a stock setup?

My opinion is that The Engineers would have given it better breathing if it needed it and get a nearly free MPG boost.

I had the trd intake and exhaust on my 19, I actually liked the noise unless going uphill on a highway then it was obnoxious, probably the exhaust more so than intake. I never noticed any HP gains going by the way it felt, just makes noise.
One thing that gives spirited performance gain with zero HP gain is sprint booster or pedal commander. They eliminate throttle response delay. Lots of nay sayers that say they can pound the pedal down fast as the device. they are mistaken.

For what its worth, I did the deckplate mod and threw a K&N "High Flow" filter on my 3.4 and the only difference was the sound that the intake made. You could hear a 'woosh' as you stepped on the throttle. If you're looking for more pep the I would tighten up the throttle cable connecting to the throttle body. Just tightening that up made a world of difference in driving my rig. As for the K&N, I simply got tired of buying new filters every few months from al the dirt roads so I wanted one that I could just wash out and put back in.
