I've got a 2000 base 2wd that I have lifted and obvious larger tires. it has a high gear set with an open carrier.

Question is, are there direct replacements from other models with lower gears and possible electric locker?

thank you in advance, long time Toyota owner, first time changing a gear set in it...

You would have to modify the axle housing to place an e-locker 3rd in it, or change the entire axle to one with an e-locker.

Do you have the v6? If so, most likely you are running 4.10 gears. In addition to 4.10, other ratios that were available in the 8” 3rd member variety include 4.30, 4.56, 4.88. You can often find complete 3rds on forums for sale or at a pick and pull lot.

I kinda figured there might be a little modification needed on the housing I just wasn't sure..

No, unfortunately, I've got the 2.7l 4 cyl. its really a dog with the larger tires, naturally lol.
are the housings the same on the v6 models?

    thank you for the info

Yes the rear axle will be the same as long as it’s from a 3rd gen 4Runner.

    Manual transmission?

If yes, I’d bet you already have 4.56 ratio. 4.88 would be the next step.

No its got an automatic in it..

But I do appreciate the info, now I know I can look for a 4.88 member that will fit and work.
