Got a 2020 4Runner recently. On one of the few nice days we have in Western NY recently I opened the rear hatch window and after about 10 minutes of driving the exhaust smell in the front seat was so strong I had to close the window. Short of cutting the exhaust before the bumper and puting a 90 degree bend and having it exit out the side any suggestions OTHER THAN keeping the rear window closed.

Should have mentioned that both rear door windows were open about 1 1/2 inches to help draw smell out. Did not work.

That's why you don't see many opening rear windows.

I open it when I have the sunroof open. I don't have any smell then, and trust me, my wife would tell me.

If I just open the back and one of the side windows, I'll get some exhaust smell, especially if opened before the engine is fully warmed up. I am curious if those with the TRD exhaust that routes to the side have noticed if it is any better.

It's nothing new. Any vehicle configured like the 4Runner does that. Old station wagons did it, that's how I know.
Don't open the window....probably get better gas mileage.

I only noticed it under load, going up a hill etc. I do have a Borla so maybe that makes a little difference?

I just drove fifty miles with my hatch half-way open. Still no exhaust smell...But I think the third gen has a more functional spoiler and the side exhaust...

Get the trd(side exhaust) or have a muffler shop turn yours out the side behind the tire. A tiny bit comes in but not enough to be that bad
