So I am in the process of outfitting my TRD for the use ahead. I always like to stay prepared and I am looking at the Rago Drivers side Molle panel. I have been looking at what I want to keep in my truck at all times and notice different schools of thought.

What do you keep in your truck at all times and why?

My truck will be used for Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Baseball games and tourneys for my boys, hopefully some off-roading

    Thank you for your input

    Water, snacks, diapers and wipes.

These are vital for keeping a 2 year old, a 4 year old, and 2 adults happy.

I also carry a battery jump starter and some tire plugs because those are probably the most common things to go wrong on a newer truck.

I have a storage bin with a bunch of tools, wiring stuff, zip ties, duct tape, flashlights, etc.

Sitting next to that is my 65qt cooler always filled with alcohol. That’s the most important part.

Jump starter, jumper cables, air compressor, axe, fat lighter for starting fires, basic tool set, ball mount hitch, plastic disposable seat covers for when I get dirty or wet, latex gloves, work gloves, zip ties, tire patch kit, a few knives, lighters... That's about all I can remember right now...

But it's all kept neatly in this box that I can easily remove when I need more space for hauling something.

    Welcome AdmiralX.

I’m in the same boat as you. Been thinking about what to carry and when. Not much use for recovery straps, high lift jack and its accessories, survival gear, etc when commuting back and forth to work and running errands around town with AAA readily available. The greater the total mass of the vehicle, the more gas it guzzles to accelerate that mass. I was thinking about a modular approach using several containers or totes of different sizes and shapes. Off the shelf $ containers from Home Depot, not purpose built $$$ containers with all the amenities (I’d rather spend my money on what goes into the container rather than the container itself).

My idea was to put stuff that could be used anytime in the nooks and crannies of the vehicle. Remember, the things you include can be used to help others as well as those in your vehicle. These would be a good class ABC fire extinguisher, general use first aid kit, jumper cables, paper towels, microfiber cloths, hand cleaner, bottled water (replace regularly), flares, flashlight, mylar survival “blankets”, basic tool kit, tie wraps, a bag of reusable grocery bags (since there’s a $0.10 fee per bag here in California), etc. Check the fire extinguisher and restock the first aid kit on a regular basis. If you have the sliding cargo tray, some things are flat enough to store under the tray.

For long road trips, I would then add a tote that would contain additional things that might be needed on a long road trip (help may be available, but may take awhile to get there). The choice of what to include might be influenced by geographical and seasonal parameters of the trip (mountains, desert, winter, summer). These might include additional first aid kit (mostly bandages), extra water and some kind of shelf stable food bars (replace on a regular basis), 12v air compressor, toilet paper, tire chains, survival blankets, plastic ground cover, tow rope, etc.

If the trip plan involves off roading, then I would include an additional tote(s) that contain appropriate items. Depending on your level of adventure, these might be recovery strap, tree saver, heavy rope, a come-along (poor man’s winch), shovel, saw, axe, traction devices, (not sure what else may be in this category).

Anyway, hope this helps, and I’ll be watching this thread for ideas.

Thank you all for answering, lots of good ideas here and its interesting to see what people think about having with them due to life experience. Being from the military I am always seeing things before they happen and I want to be prepared for things, however I don't have much 4x experience so I want to understand what the community thinks.

As 4X Old Guy pointed out a modular system has great benefits and is where I was heading with things and IMO a smart idea, BUT the basics that stay in the truck were interesting along with things I didn't think about even if I am a father and know everything lol

With the hoarding due to corona virus panic, TP might be a little pricy right now

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
If you haven't already, get yourself a hitch mounted D-Ring Shackle. You'll need a hitch pin or locking hitch pin.
    Example:
    https://www.rhinousainc.com/product...zi-aoC2YLUjqmpGC0l3sh80YTImZsBt0aAja8EALw_wcB

This gives you a good strong rear recovery point.
You can see mine in this pic:
    https://4rstatic.net/attachments/black-badges-3-jpg.39506/

I really need a box that's bolted to the rear.
Last time off roading, I ratchet strapped everything down so it didn't go flying.

Up front in the console box I keep:
2 spare loaded Glock 17 mags.
    Mora fixed blade Knife
    Fire starter (misch metal)
    Bic Lighters
    Small box of band-aids.

In the back I keep the following:

    Recovery strap
    Tree Strap
    4 Ratchet Straps
    3 D-Ring Shackles
    Snatch Block
    Winch Controller cable
Viair Air Compressor w/ tire deflation tool.
Tire plug kit (found a surplus medical pouch to store this in)
    4 MRE's 2 Mayday Food Bars
    Survival Straw water filter.
    Bushcraft style pot with lid.
    Pair of boots.
    Surplus Gore-Tex BDU Jacket
    Pair of work gloves.

If going off road - I'll add:
    Water
    Snatch strap
    Generic Traction Boards
Set of metric and standard wrenches, pliers.

    Things I need:
    Better First Aid Kit
    Winch cable repair kit
55 gal drum of hand sanitizer & MOPP4 suit - kidding.

Around town/commuting, in addition to what Toyota provided, I keep:
    • a set of heavy duty jumper cables in an old burlap zipper bag from some rice I bought
    • a folded up tarp flat on the floor of the cargo area under a cargo net
    • due to aftermarket wheels, a lug nut socket specifically for them
    • an old school 4-way lug wrench intertwined in the cargo net, flat on the floor
    • a roll of TP in a zip lock bag (hey I used to live in Alaska - old habits die hard)
    • a box of Kleenex
    • half a dozen microfiber cloths - console, each door, rear cargo area, glove box
    • a couple of cloth "grocery bags"
    • two sets of leather gloves - lined and unlined
    • (winter) snow brush/window scraper (though a credit card works as a window scraper in a pinch)
    • a small notebook
    • a couple of pens and pencils
    • a Bic lighter or three
    • a small cloth bag of loose change - nickels, dimes, and mostly quarters
    • a quart of oil - also a great fire starter when used with microfiber cloths
    • a small mirror
    • an analog tire pressure gauge
    • a Leatherman
I always have my wallet, cell phone, pocket knife, and bandana/kerchief with me so that covers other aspects.

For hunting, fishing, off-roading trips, the gear changes as appropriate but the bottom line is to stay alive and healthy if I can't extract myself.
As an Eagle Scout following the Boy Scout motto of "Be Prepared" I follow the OPs military training advice.
And thank you OP for your service!
