    I know this conversation is on the general forum...but I wanted to hear on the first gens with a 22 RE, manual transmission, transfer case and differentials. When I first got my 85 4 Runner 8 years ago I changed over to all Mobil One...Everything!!! I have lived and breathed Mobil One since it came out in 1974...I was 19 then...yes I'm old...well not that old!!! What have you guys experienced with engine oil, transmission, transfer case and differential noises, clattering cold starts, turns and differential noises, shifting issues or not, shifting transfer cases in and out of 4 Hi and 4 Low to 2 Hi...anything...just curious...thanks everyone!!!     I've only used Redline MT-90 in all my manual trans. Engine oil you can pretty much use whatever as long as you are changing regularly.

    I think you would do well to stick with it, sounds like it has been working for you so far.

    Probably my biggest reaction on Mobil One for cold start in Missouri in the winter it would clatter (10w 30w Mobil One) almost uncomfortably so I would start and warm it up for 5 minutes...until I bought Red Line...(10w-30w) and I have never had a clatter on a cold start...it may be voodoo shit but try it one time and please tell me your experience...then try your transmission and so on...these old trucks love this synthetic oil and it 's rare...I've tried them all...but tell me what have experienced please!

    I agree but what have you experienced with the lubricants you have used in the winter in particular...I know what clatters in my truck and I do like synthetic lubricants...I'm just trying to figure our what is best for our 4 Runners...because there is a difference from Toyota to American...I don't understand totally why...but there must be a tolerance acceptance...I'm on a mission with this...any help or thoughts are very welcome...Amos

    Lastly...with all Red Line...with American wheels and 31 X 10.50 I am getting 22 MPG and can do 70 all day long up and down hills...I do have an LCE header and 2.5 exhaust and it's Awesome...well not like a 350CI in my Chevelle...but pretty nice...this Forum is the Best one Ever!!!

    When I had a 22r/re I would drop to a 5w in the winter and back to 10w in summer. Now I have a 3RZ so I'll only run 5w30 cause that's what I ran year round in the Tacoma.

    What do I use? Whatever brand the garage used where I take it for oil changes I've never even asked. I do know they use the recommended viscosity which is all I care about. From WalMart brand to Amsoil and everything in between most of what we buy and swear by is because of marketing that catches our eye whether we know it or not.

    None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
    I, personally, for what it's worth, use Castrol Syntec, 5W30 in my 4Runner, which we drive in the winter time. Why? Snow + 4WD = no problems :D
    For the rear and front diffs, and the transfer case, I use Castrol 70W90 GL4.
    Last time the diffs and xfer case were checked, the oil was clean as a whistle. The mechanic said it looked I had just changed it out. I told him "no, it was 9 years ago..."

    For the pickup, I use Castrol Syntec 10W30 for the engine, and same as the 4Runner for the differential.

    Why do I use the Castrol Syntec in the engine?
    I used it in my motorcycle when I ran in a parade many years ago. Kawasaki KZ1000P, 4 cyl Police Special. anywho, it was a Memorial Day Parade in Yuma, Az. About 105° that day, and the parade was moving SLOW, as they tend to. All the motorcycles in the parade got friggen HOT, especially the air-cooled ones, like mine. We finally all got worried, and started doing patterns around our area in the parade to try and cool them down a little. The announcers said we had practiced this stuff for weeks. We just wanted to try and cool the bikes down :D
    When I got home afterwards, I was sure the oil was going to be fried, so I went to change it. It was clean as if I had just changed it, and still slick as ever. Not a real scientific test, but I got some on my fingers from the bike, rubbed my fingers together, then compared it to a sample fresh out the bottle. They felt the same to me. That sold ME on Castrol Syntec. If it could stand up to that kind of punishment and stay just as slick, it could handle anything the engines in my Toyotas could do to it!
