Hey ya'll. Can't seem to figure this out. I drive down a big hill every day on my way to work and I would prefer to just remove my foot from the gas and coast. Unfortunately, my 4runner seems to have this engine brake system which does not permit my car to coast and/or pick up speed going down the hill. Is this normal? Is there a way to limit this?

    Any help is appreciated!

Yes it is completely normal but unfortunately I don’t know if it can be limited or changed. My 2nd Gen Tacoma, my 2016 Corolla, and my wife’s 2016 Highlander all do the same exact thing. It’s even worst when cruise control is engaged. It can be annoying but at least it’s not hurting anything .

Use the shifter to drop it down a gear or two.

I was going to make this same exact thread. I never noticed this until going down a big hill last week.

I will add a question, though: does the engine make a whining noise? almost like it sounds like its trying to speed up?

Ever since 2004 the transmission’s in the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser (2007-2014) were equipped with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Shift control. This changes gear-shifting patterns according to driving conditions and driver intent.

Only way to change it is to change your driving style or disconnect the battery to reset it.

Would it be wrong to just throw it into neutral!?!?!

In some states it’s illegal (not sure how they’d catch you on it). It also consumes more fuel to be in neutral than it does in gear and coasting.

I changed some lights, tires and tinted windows...mind blowing huh
i heard that some transmissions wont properly cool or lubricate or something like that in neutral, probably wrong but who knows.
