Does anyone else have a wacky fuel gauge. Its difficult on my 99 4runner to tell 1) mileage (although not expecting much here) and 2) amount of accurate fuel consumption. Example: I fill it when close to empty and it only takes 10 gallons. when its full, I drive 40 miles and its just above halfway. is this a common problem? Thanks for your input in advance.

Yes. It's the fuel sender in the tank. Common issue. Mine finally drove me to the point of insanity and got me to drop the tank and replace it. Now the gauge is perfect.

Also, mine lasted about 180k miles I think. The contacts will be burnt out when you pull it. Don't try to fix it. Just buy a new TOYOTA one.
