Supercharger

I can see this thread and the Magnuson video linked above is going to cost me about $6000. And I'll have a few new tools when I'm done.

 

Can you all explain the supercharger to me? I have a 2018 TRD pro, also purchased from Right Toyota. Does the supercharger increases power and mpg? Can it be retrofitted? Not sure I want to spend the money, but having more power certainly would be nice!

 

1. It will fit any 5th gen 4Runner, the Pro is the exact same truck as the others.
2. The supercharger increases power (by about 40%), but not MPG.
3. Retrofitting is the only way you're getting one on there, as it is not a factory-installed item.
4. Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

 

Someone needs to start a group buy!

 

I doubt there you could even start a group buy. They know what they have and this is the only supercharger available for the 4. No reason to give any discount yet until demand falls way off and that will be a long time from now. So I will save my money and keep nice stock 4 nice and stock.

 

So I’ll weigh in here. Last week I traded my 2014 Tacoma TRD Sport with TRD SuperCharger. Dealer installed at 2500 miles.
For the Tacoma it definitely needed the power, 230hp stock. Saved my ass at the OBX, had I not had the power needed to get unstuck the tide would have got my truck with in minutes. It was either blow it up or get it unstuck. It got unstuck.

4Runner....I don’t feel like it needs that much more power. However I do feel it’s lacking a little. Intake and exhaust might do it for me.
If you are gonna do it here are mods that you really need to do in support of the supercharger.
•Catch can, the intercooler gets gummy quickly. This will help keep things clean/maintenance free.
•Fuel pump needs to be upgraded, factory failures are common on stock SuperCharged Tacos.
•Transmission cooler(bigger than stock) needs to be upgraded. Needs a fan too. I live in Wilmington NC and pull my 19ft boat less than 30 miles round trip. In traffic temps got hot!!! Off Road temps get hot and quick!!! I consider this one a must above all else.
•Boost gauge....self explanatory
•Air Fuel gauge....would not run with out one. At the very least run a scan gauge and you can monitor trans temp, intake air temp, water temp and AF at same time.

Other things to consider, if you don’t wrench yourself you will want to learn how to quickly or it can get expensive quick.

Maintenance
•Belts. Have to unbolt idler pulleys/bracket to do belt. Only way to get belts on off. Run gator back belts, if you increase boost/power because stock slips with more HP.
•Spark plugs. Tacoma had 100k plugs in the TRD SC kit, mine looked like shit after 60k. Definitely want to check them from time to time. The Tacoma you had to pull SC off to get to driver side plugs....pain in the ass!
•Intercooler pump....I would keep an extra one on hand as they can go out with out you knowing. Go out around 40k on average. Can be hard to find and expensive. There is an alternative pump from a mustang I believe can be used.
•Must run Premium fuel. I had best mileage and power from ethanol free 93
•100k maintenance; SC needs to be rebuilt. Nose cone oil needs to be changed...really around 60k. Impellers need to be machined and re coated. Bearings need to be replaced. Kit adds idler pulleys that you should really replace...might be fine until 150k but you’ve done the rebuild already so why not for peace of mind. Intercooler pump replacement, should have done at least one by now.

Toyota says no intake or exhaust. On a SC vehicle where’s the fun in that? Intake really woke my truck up. I added the TRD exhaust when I did the SC can’t imagine not having exhaust on a SC vehicle. Kit should have come with both for the price.
Screw the warranty it’s my truck and because race truck gotta have more power right? Tuning has only been available past the factory tune for the last year and still isn’t perfect. URD is the only tuning device/piggy back ECU I would consider. Headers, intake, exhaust, pulley and meth injection is as far as I would go.....on a stock motor. That’s the Taco around 370ish HP.

If it was me and I had to have a SC on a 4Runner the 70ish hp the TRD/Magnuson is not worth it for $7k.
Another option is URDs kit. It’s bigger makes double power 130ish HP for around the same price.....but that’s 400HP on a stock block.....just saying. Yikes!!!
