Hello, I am new to this site and looking for advice. My husband and I are three time Toyota buyers, with a 2004 4Runner, 2005 Sequoia and a 2019 Tundra. Today we looked at a 2020 4Runner 4x4 TRD off road Premium. Anything we should know before buying?

Welcome aboard, the 4Runner is a great vehicle BUT when you don’t need the capability of this rig you should go with a highlander. I want the capability and I’m okay with the gas mileage, the dated technology is nothing what bothers me. I have my 2020 Off Road premium now for 2 month and just 3k miles and I’m in love but If it was only as a family car to go mall crawling I would choose something else

    Welcome to the forum!

Are you curious about anything specific?

These are excellent vehicles. They are well built, reliable, and have excellent resale value. They are also great for exploring off the beaten path.

What are you looking for in a vehicle?

Headlights and gas milead are its weak points. Not all premiums comes with sunroof. Test drive a model with and without KDSS and see if you think it's worth the extra $1700. Check out the sliding rear cargo and see if you'll use it. I went with KDSS and sunroof, but passed on the rear sliding cargo. You need a cable to connect Apple Car Play.

For the 2020 4Runner models, only the Limited and TRD Pro has remote start/connect.

Bring a small super bright led flashlight with. Hold it up to the 8" screen and look for scratches. May need to look from multiple angles. If scratches are present make them replace it. (in writing) or swap it from another on the lot.
Stereo is over 4k and many dealer prep guys wipe it down with a rough towel. Here's a thread with pics. Scratches or not get a screen protector and you'll be good to go. Link shows options for them as well

    Currently stock; MODS coming soon.
Toyota dealers won’t swap head unit or parts from another new car/truck on the lot. They will just order the part and most likely schedule you for install.

The touch screen scratches very easily. And you can't see it in some types of light. I first noticed it at sunset and it was horrible. When I ran the light on my iPhone over it I could spot the scratches as well. My dealer had to replace the screen. When I got the new one (which had no scratches) I slapped a screen protector on it right away. I think the screen material is soft.

They pulled one off the lot and I saw them change it
Mistake I made is I didn't hold a Brite light up to it before I left. Morons scratched it while installing it. Been back and forth with general manager and service manager to get it swapped. They don't have any more on the lot with limited or pro features

There are quite a few folks with CarPlay issues and the head unit. Make sure to bring your iphone and make tests calls on any one you are going to buy. It's pretty common and there is no fix right now so make sure you test the specific car you are planning to buy. The issue is only with phone calls so don't be fooled by normal carplay functions working fine. The Limited and TRD Pro are the only models you can get with automatic headlights and the "remote connect" features (remote start and door lock/unlock from your phone). If I could rewind to November I would have bought a TRD Pro instead but that's just me. If you aren't planning to use any of the off road features then there is little reason to purchase the OR IMO. You get a hood scoop with it though. All "premium" trim packages come with turn signal mirrors and push button start. I believe the TRD Pro comes with push button start and no turn signal mirrors (could be wrong on that though).

This is exactly correct. I have a 2020 SR5P with the CarPlay issue and we tested out another on the lot. Works fine but they were not able to swap the head unit. I am now waiting on an ETA for a new unit to arrive.

I’d be worried about taking a screen protector off (when/if the time comes to replace it)... won’t it be so sticky that it will pull out or stretch the underlying plastic film covering the screen?

The screen isn’t a hard screen like an iPhone. It’s like an iPhone with an additional piece of plastic resting on top of it.

I have 2 different screen protector. The one I have on now is the Radtech. And I have pulled it off to check to see if screen is ok and it is. You can remove this protector and put it back on. It just clings to the Toyota screen. Working very well for me. It sucks you need to buy one for $20.00 but I don’t want Toyota technician messing with my screen. You could have more issues than just putting the screen protector on.

1F50DCCF-3F42-4556-A986-B585E940FD83.jpg This is the Jetech and still works the same way. But I don’t like that it’s a little long and they don’t custom size it like Radtech.

Thanks for all the input. I have narrowed down to the TRD 4x4 Premium or the 4x4 Limited. I really like the dual zone control, but not a deal breaker. I like the KDSS since at some point will need it for the snow and I can see us using it off-road (miss our ATVs). Also looking at the lift kit and accompanying wheels/tires.

Well, you miss the atv’s... then take the off road premium (ORP) rather then the limited. That’s because the limited is limited when it comes to off road use!

You don’t “need” kdss for snow or off road. At all. Nice to have (i assume) but absolutely not a necessity.

I’ve had several Tacoma’s and 4runners over the course of 20 years and had never even heard of kdss until recently and I never felt I was lacking anything at all in snow or off-road.

Buy what you love and can afford. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s against the law to take an OR to the mall. I’ve only had the rear locker locked on mine 2X but it’s great to know it’s there. 4 Runners are slightly archaic but they’re super dependable and have 8 air bags. Reasons enough to buy one. However, they are gas guzzlers and by a large measure greater than current standards. My next vehicle will definitely be electric. Maybe a Cybertruck.

    Hi,
Which one? The Radtech. If it’s this one just google it and add the measurements for your screen protector. The other one Jetech screen protector is on Amazon.

I’d avoid the limited for off road use. A rear locker is pretty important off road if you need it. KDSS is great. Mine has tremendous drive ability because of it. Off road it’s optional, but at high speeds on big highways it’s great technology.

I went with the anti glare and I can see my screen no problem day or night. I went with 7x4.25. If I had to order again I would change the width. The 4.25 height is perfect but the width I think I should have gone 7and eight. Just a little over 7inches. But my screen you cannot notice that little bit.

Just remember with this screen which is nice you can remove it and put it back on. It’s not one of those screens once and done.
