Just got my wife a 2020 4runner TRD Off Road. She really likes the look of the TRD PRO roof rack basket. I am assuming that the rack can be installed on her 4runner. Does anyone have pictures of installing one of these racks?

    Thanks
    Bv

    Hey Brian,
If you google roof rack deleted for the Toyota 4Runner there is a long post from the guy that posted it how to do it and read it carefully and take your time. I just removed my Pro rack did not like it and put the black rails on. The post is on the other Toyota 4Runner forum.

FD2D65F8-5265-4F8A-893D-7B17F20FEDDC.jpg Here is some pics so you have a idea. The issue is also the lock tite that is put on at the port with the Pro rack with the bolts. You cannot just unscrew them out. Because you can twist the bracket that is inside the headliner and if that happens you need to remove the headliner to put new brackets on so the bolts can attach to it.

I know this is different what you are looking to do. Your first removing the rails and adding the Pro roof rack. But your still doing the same with removing the bolts and they probably have lock tite on them.

When I removed the bolts on my roof rack, I loosen them little by little going back and forth with each bolt until I was able to loosen them by hand. That way the bracket underneath doesn’t have a problem when you take them off.

actually when removing the stock rails, you’ll also encounter look tite. This picture was taken when I removed my stock rails before installing my pro rack.

The key is to remove each of the bolts as a pair. If one bolt is removed while the other bolt is still in place, the second bolt has enough lock tite that it may rotate the bracket which holds these in place.

but by leaving both in place during the “lock tite phase”, the bracket will not rotate out of place. Just turn each bolt, one turn at a time until your clear of the “lock tite phase”

you’ll know when your clear as removing the bolt will become very easy and then can be removed by hand.

Also the bracket under the roof but over the headliner which can come loose is called the longitudinal bracket. It’s item #3. If your cautious and follow procedure, you’ll be fine. Also do the same for the install of the pro roof rack as those bolts contain the same “lock store phase” during the install.

Thanks all for the info!! The 4runner we have now has factory rails I'll have to remove and then replace with a TRD PRO rack once I can find one. Just wanted to make sure I understand what was involved before I look for the new rack to replace her factory one with

They are sometimes hard to find. Not sure if you have seen this thread or if you’re buying a new one:

I've gone back and forth on the basket. I wanted one when I had the white SR5 but not sure I like it on the Green TRD Pro. The wife is the other way around. She didn't want it on the white but likes the way it looks on the green. Once I decide I'll be looking to do a straight trade for the all black rails but you pay the dealership to do the swap. That way if there is anything that goes wrong they fix it (including future water leaks).

Hey guys, i am new to this forum so pardon my ignorant question. I was able to buy the roof rack for cheap through local classified. However, its missing the hardware bag. I saw the installation instruction manual attached above. I was wandering can i still use my old rack(the regular one it came with) hardware to mount the trd pro rack? If not, where can i buy just the hardware bag(screws, washer etc)? thanks for the help.

take a look at this thread. It has the part numbers to install the TRD pro rack as well as the 4 brackets you’ll also need @ post #200. I would not use bolts/rubber washers which were not intended for the TRD pro rack. It may cause leaking issues down the road.

What hardware and washers? lol I'm going to see if I can reuse the hardware from the stock SR5 rack and fill in the holes with RTV or Silicone

Why risk it when there’s a cheap Oem solution. Look at post #24 for details

There's already bolts and washers attaching the oem roof rails so I think the only difference is probably the look of a zinc plated hex bolt vs the low profile black torx bolts. I don't like torx anyway. The heads like to strip.

If it fits, it sits... I'll make sure leaks aren't a problem. I used to use RTV to seal external antennas on aircraft all the time. It's good stuff.

the stock roof rails has a plastic cover so it’s hidden from the elements. The pro rack has exposed bolts and uses two sets of washers. One over the rack (composite) and one under the rack (foam). The Toyota engineers did this for a reason.

Hey it’s your truck. We’re just trying to help with a $20 Oem solution. Perhaps later google the guy who’s roof is rusted because he used RTV.
