Lets talk Under coating / Rust Prevention

So I just got a thing in the mail for my 2016 Tacoma that was totaled out back in July. Regarding problems with Frame Corrosion?? Well Obviously I don't have to worry about it since truck is gone. But it was replaced with a new 2019 4Runner.
And I live in Central Illinois so we get snow and massive amounts of Salt on the road!!

Whats the best undercoating for rust prevention?? What do you guys out in the North East use? I want to protect my baby!

And why have they had such problems with the Tacoma's and rusty frames but not other models?? Seems like you never hear of it on 4Runners....

Definitely rust issues with 4th gens. I used POR15 on mine after the wire wheel. Came out great. Buy a quart minimum and hit frame, lcas, rear end, spare tire area etc. Dont do the bolt heads, makes them harder to remove.

Glove up and wear old clothes. Its thick and does not come off skin easily.

 

I have seen a lot of good reviews on Fluid Film from this forum.

 

i need to wire wheel a couple of spots and repaint/seal. after that i plan on using fluid film on the undercarriage probably by months end.

 

Fluid Fild works great at preventing rust and keeping the under carriage looking new. Smells awful though.

 

I know a lot of people use fluid film. I go to a place in nh that makes their own stuff that seems to be a little thicker. But I think anything is going to be better than nothing

 

wire wheeled a bunch of surface rust off yesterday. cleaned up the areas and used black undercarriage spray paint on the areas. fluid film is the next step. probably next week. gonna be a mess im sure haha

 

I use fluid film. Have applied it twice myself two years in a row. No rust at all underneath. I am going to not do it this year and see if I can do it every other year.

 

I also vouch for fluid film.

I've been using it for years on all my vehicles.

Start off by hitting all of the hard to reach places...crawling under the car. It makes the process easier if you jack up the car and remove wheels but not necessary. I also make sure to hit up any holes in the frame etc. Then do a nice even spray on the larger easier to reach areas. Entire process takes me around 30-40 min + 3-4 cans of fluid film.

 

Wool wax. Made by same people thicker stays on better and has no smell also can get it in black

 

My 2020 Pro going this Monday to have the fluid film done. Getting it done before I put any miles on my Pro. Been sitting in the garage since I bought it and waiting to have this done.

I ordered some fluid film off Amazon and did as much as I could. i will get it on a lift and hit it again next summer. It works, you can see the water bead right off the hitch.

 

Yeah there’s a guy on the other Toyota forum pretty close to
me that does the 4runner. He recommends every 2 years. Unless you want to be over protective you can do it every year.

 

I fluid film all my vehicles every year and don't drive the 4Runner until spring.

 

Been using FF since 2014 using it on two previously owned Tacoma’s and the 4R. I havnt applied it this yr, but prob should touch up some spots!!

 

Im assuming you get under there and thoroughly wash everything before applying the fluid film or that thing never sees an ounce of dust. Either way, that frame is a beaut

 

I've used Fluid Film in the past with success; although, I never liked the fact that it remains wet to the touch and attracts dirt. Messy if working on vehicle after application and dirt clings to it. Since it remains wet, it gradually 'rinses' off with each undercarriage rinse throughout the winter. Benefit to not drying is that it can work its way into cracks and crevices.

After extensive research, I chose AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector (HD MP)for my '20 4Runner. Very happy with the application and confident on the protection. Many videos online about this product. Sprays on from 15oz. aerosol cans as a yellowish colored liquid, but dries as a wax-like coating that appears mostly clear. Does not attract dirt, but provides great protection for all treated areas.

 

I had my fluid film done tonight from Steve in NJ. He has posting on the Toyota forum. Well worth the drive from Pa to NJ. Very professional and great guy to meet. He did a awesome job on my 2020 Pro.

Heres what crc heavy duty corrosion inhibitor looks like on the frame. For those who haven’t used it its a VERY clingy wax that dries like candle wax and last a long time even on high wash areas. Also you can see how the water just beads off it like duck feathers

 

I use fluid film once a year, all my yotas are rust free.

 

Same with mine. Had a Tacoma for 4 years in NY salt and frame looked excellent when I traded.

 

has anyone here heard of Krown coatings? I had it done to my Ford F250 last year and as long as i have it done once a year its warrantied for the life of the vehicle..its a proven thing in Canada. This is a treatment for the inside of the body of the vehicle rockers inside doors ,fenders etc..as well as the complete underbody and inside outside of chassis etc.. anyone heard of it? I just bought my 4 runner and probably going to have it done too in the next few weeks

 

Do you have pics of the under body after fluid film? How much fluid did they use?

 

I did not take any pics. Steve that did it took pics and sent them to me while he was doing it. He covered it really good. It was coated really thick. He does his 17 Pro every year. But he recommends every 2 years. Unless you want to be really fussy then you can do the same. I’m going to wait to see what it looks like in a year and determine if it needs it again.

 

weather and my timing has been shitty so i am hoping to get mine done on saturday or sunday. weather looks good, hoping the rain holds off!
