I have read that some first gen 4runners came without rear seats. I did not know they had a rear panel made to replace the seat pan. I found one the other day and picked it up. I only found one photo on line. I don't think I will use it but I had to have it.

First photo is the one I found online.

I do not know what I will do with this one. It was in a t4r that had the windows broke out. the truck sits near the bay so everything rust. You can tell by the dark spots the rust was setting in good. Maybe there is someone out there who wants or needs this, but if not, I think I will hold on to it. I want to put in quick release pin's on the bottom seat brackets. That way my wife and I can stretch out when we camp. Maybe I can make it into a quick change option. Though putting the seat flat gets the same result.

I have been searching for one of these for my 4runner for a while now. Would either of you be willing to sell?

Morning new member...I haven't ever installed mine but I'm pretty sure it increase the value of the trucks when you do...they are hard to find. I'll keep my eye out...you may want to post a general request by a new posts in the 1st Generation section...there has to be others with them.

I wonder if that's from one of the very first 4runners made. They basically took the toyota truck and added a topper to the back. It was actually a custom option by some dealership in coordination with winnebago I believe. Then toyota saw the success and started production of the 4runner. It would kinda of make since for the early ones to not have a back seat, because of the fact it was essentially just a pickup truck.

Edit, well scratch that... lol... it was called a trekker and did come with a back seat.

No I have definitely NOT seen one! But now that I have, I most definitely want one! I removed the back seat years ago so I could sleep back there on runs. It would be nice to have a level surface. If you ever want to part with it... ;)

I read they all came from Japan without rear seats. They were sold as a "utility" vehicle over seas and all back seats were added when they came to dealerships here. Ill have to find the article...

Yep...you are right 4scooter19...I'm not sure about the 1984 but the 1985 Toyota 4 Runner got the removable top and Winnebago did make a bunch for a dealership...and they sold them all and the rest is history!!!

Winnebago made the Trekker based on the 3rd gen Hi-Lux. Toyota saw the potential and came out with the 4rnr in '84. All 1st Gen 4rnrs have removable tops. IMG_3369.jpg

I will say again...the Japanese engineers never gave you what you wanted...they had to learn that..they gave you what you needed...these 4 Runners were built to go...and they did...mine has over 315,000 and it runs incredibly well!!!

I wish that Trekker was mine! I do agree with everything you've said. Nearly every time I gas up my '88 I get compliments and/or offers.
Here's my little gem. ~235K miles and doesn't leak a drop! Runs like a Swiss watch. :DIMG_2119.jpg

    Thread Resurrection!!
I was lucky enough to buy a 1985 body from my local junk yard and it had the rear seat delete panel shown above. Also, the side panels in the rear DO NOT have the openings for the lap seat belts or the large square cubby. Those must have been added by the dealer along with the back seats.
I'm definitely keeping all these rare items!!

A year ago, I bought an '86 in pristine condition. It only has 47,000 and had been garaged its whole life. The owners were a couple: he died young and she became a recluse. A few years back she went into assisted living and then passed. The estate was sold and I scored this beauty for 1,500. Unbelievable. The truck has no rear seats and looks almost exactly like the first picture in this thread. This is my 3rd '86 and I had never seen this before. A friend had rear 1st gen seats and gave them to me. I tried to install them today. I pulled up that panel and was able to get the bottom of the seats in just find but can't figure out how to secure the back and how the panel should now go. I can find nothing online about how to do it. Any advice, y'all?
