has anyone had success on installing rear shocks on a 2002 4Runner? Any tricks to getting around the cone to get the nut loose at the top?

Extend the shocks by lifting it and then sawzall the shafts.
I’ve heard its the easiest way.

+1 for sawzall. Angle grinder/cut off tool would also work. The nut is seized for most of us.

I put a chain/strap wrench on the metal shock boot and a wrench on the top mine came off fairly easy. It helps to put the rear end up on ramps and remove the spare tire so you can sit cross leg under it.

After doing my lift recently on my 98 I would have to agree that the Sawzall is the way to go. Too bad Toyota didn't do something with the rear shock as they had on the Land Cruiser. 2 bolts removes the mount from the top and then the eyelet bolt on the bottom and the shock is out. Not this contortionist crap on the 4Runner.
