driving in strong crosswind

Greetings, Im new to 4runners. I recently purchased a new 2019 SR5. While this vehicle checks most of the boxes I was looking for in a 4wd. I have noticed that strong cross winds seem to push it around a bit on the interstate. It is equipped with standard street tires (Bridgestone duelers HT). I've been thinking about changing to all terrain tires, or getting a spare set of rims, and mounting more aggressive tires on them, for my trips to the mountains.

Would tires make a difference in how the wind affects it on the interstate?

 

I'm fairly certain the 4-Runner is considered a high-profile vehicle as are most true SUV's.

I don't think so either. You said a mouthful with "true SUV", most of the others are just cars. High winds don't make it intolerable, but noticeable.

 

Anything moves or at least you'll feel it some. Hell I feel "high winds" going down the road in my Accord daily driver.

Of course you would, what's that car weigh, about 2000lbs?

I don't feel high winds like I do in this 4runner, when I'm in my 2wd 1/2 ton pickup with a camper shell.

I did read a review about the 4runner that accurately stated that it is; "a very capable off road vehicle, that is tolerable, on the way to the trails", if all I have to deal with, is better grip on the wheel while driving through Kansas, I'm ok with that.

Sometimes I wonder what people expect out of a body-on-frame 4×4. I can't even imagine what they would say about a Tacoma. Or, worse yet, a Wrangler.

Most of the people who ride in my 4runner comment about how nice it rides. I think most reviewers are completely out of touch with reality. They seem to compare everything to the highest level of luxury available.

I don't really notice the issue with the wind. Probably because I've owned 2 other 4runners and a Tacoma. I think I'm just used to it. My '94 was definitely way worse.

 

I drove Chevy Blazers and Trailblazers for almost 25 years before moving up to the 4Runner. Definitely have to watch it on the hwy in high wind/draft conditions, compared to my old rides, but it does sit up higher so I guess that's to be expected. Still love it though, smooth as silk around town.

 

I have A/T tires on my 4R, and it still wanders in a breeze. Part of the charm of a true SUV IMO... I do find the 4R very comfortable to drive coming from a Taco (especially the seats!), but we take my wife’s GC on longer trips.

 

We traded the wife's Highlander for the 4runner, it is different. It reminds me of a mid size Tahoe, that is a lot more fun to drive, easier to get in and out of, and a breeze to park.

 

I like this description! You're right. It feels substantial, yet maneuverable.

 

I for one wasn't buying the 4Runner for luxury, my wifes Tahoe is for that and some long trips. I bought this for adventuring, offroading, fishing etc. I expect this to act like a truck. Remember this vehicle is like a brick with wheels so you will get some wind issues

 

A stiffer suspension would slightly decrease the cross-wind wobble on the highway.
