Dobinsons VS Toytec

I figured i would make a new thread for this, so if anyone was torn with this question later down the road they would not have to dig through other thoughts and questions of another thread. Also i need some thoughts sooner than later, due to im taking a road trip in the end of June and need a new setup before then.

So as stated above:

Dobinsons 3” with heavy duty front coils or Toytec Boss 3” with 700lb front coils?

Also are the Spc adjustable UCAs maintmence free, i dont like the uniballs being a hasel and skeaking, too many flashbacks with that.

Also to answer a question i know that will be asked and helps out the answers to some: my use for the truck is a daily driver, with mild to medium offroading, nothing extreme like rock crawling.

 

Anyone? I need to order a kit this week.

to be honest, Ive never heard of Dobinsons, go with Toytec. Ive had them on 2 rigs and now my 2007, 100% happy with everything.

 

As far as I can tell Dobinsons are more comparable to OME than coilovers. Everything I have read seems to be positive. They seem relatively maintenance free compared to coilovers. I think the Dobinsons kit is more geared for slow flexy travel and the toytec is more on the high speed desert end. Could be wrong, but that is what I have gathered so far. I am debating between Dobinsons and OME personally.

 

Dobinsons is huge over on T4r.org. By all reports it is good stuff with good support.

 

Yea i have read through all of the forums there, Dobinsons are really close by to me and i can pick up the set and not have to worry about shipping, and get them next day. A friend of mine recommended them to me after lifting his lexus gx.

 

If you're still around, would you please comment on what happened with your suspension experience and what you chose? Also, did you do the UCAs? How did that go and what kind did you buy?

I went with Toytech Boss with HD 700lb front coils and SPC UCAs. I have no complaints on any of it. Ive given the suspension a good beating on a torn up logging road with tons of stumps and drainage ditches in the road. I decided on the Toytech because I got adjustable coils for the same price as Dobisons with no adjustability, and I plan on adding more weight over time so I liked the fact I can adjust accordingly. I like the ride and the nose dive and body roll are gone and I can put an ice chest in the trunk without any sag. Both companies were very nice and answered all my questions. I know people with Dobinisons and they have nothing bad to say about them, and if I were to do it again I would still be 50/50 on both brands. On the UCA's I highly recommended the SPCs. IMO it gives the 4Runner really nice handling along with a proper alignment. The highway jitters are gone when I ran a lift with stock UCA's.

 

Thank you for asking. We are located far south out of the zone so we're ok (though at this very moment a potent thunderstorm is rolling thru and power is gone). Where the cyclone made landfall we have lots of friends (some we know are ok for the time being) and we are praying/hoping none who are in rural areas are harmed...but we just don't know and may not know for another week or more. There is another +/-meter of rain forecast to fall this week in that region. I have no idea how bad it will get. But since the initial rainfall with cyclone was half a meter...it's probably going to get VERY BAD!! In one area, overnight, the flooding raised additional 3-4 meters...that's a lot of water on top of almost 2 meters flooding. Rescue crews reported needing to break and sleep last night and returned immediately to the last zone they were covering and people who had previously been safe could not be found due to the rise in flood water. This is very difficult on these people...wondering if they should have made one more trip...but realizing if they had their state of mind may have caused them to also perish. It's a very sad and gut-wrenching thing to go through. Hope it's ok to have written it all out...but it's completely occupying the minds of most people here.

 

From what I hear from US-based friends, the storm didn't get perhaps as much attention as deserved, given the magnitude of human impact. But there are a lot of orgs stepping up and the US military has finally entered the fray and is making some drops of food aid. Very welcome and huge dent in the needed volume, at least for the next month.
We are going to go in another two weeks to help with rebuilding efforts at some communities and orphanages we are connected with. So far we've been able to offer some basic help with provisioning some food and water resources via mobile money transfers. It's amazing some tech we have down here that allows us to do things with simple text messaging and/or carrier money services.

This is a good thread. I currently have a toytec boss kit with the HD springs on the front and rear of mine, but have been thinking if I should go dobinsons instead. I like the thought of the long travel setup that dobinsons offers for the rear.

Im not sure what a stock 4R feels like with nosedive, but with my 4R with the toytec boss, a proline elite front bumper and winch, I feel like my 4R dives up and down pretty easily at the front under normal braking / takeoff etc. But then again I dont have a stock 4R to compare this to.

 

I run a similar set up, but with a sso simline bumper and winch, so i have less weight up front. But with that said I have some nose dive, but it is drastically reduced from stock, and body roll has been eliminated. Keep in mind you do want some nose dive, if you have zero that means your shocks are really stiff and can have a jarring ride. Having some nose dive means your shocks have a little room to play and absorb some impacts from the road

 

Thanks. The boss kit was on mine when I got it, so I dont have a before to compare to. Its not terrible, but it is for sure noticeable. Of course I came from a leveled tundra, and this is my first 4Runner.

 

Those leveled Tundras have no brake dive, my old man drives one, but it has coils to support a heavy trailer and it is a heavier truck. Sadly that would be too harsh on a 4runner.
