Lift with 3rd Generation Tacoma Coils and Shocks

    I just bought this set of shocks and coils in Tacomaworld. Will pair rear shocks with Bilsteins B12 coils SKU 36-2817. I expect to get 2" to 2-1/2" lift front, and 1.8" to 2" rear.

    bridgestone revo 3 5100's @2.5/1.5. Stock springs & rear daystar 1.5" spacers
    If it were me.....I would hold off on the rear springs. Install the shocks and see where you are at up front.

    also I can't be quite sure but i think this is going to change how your 4runner rides as the shocks look to be from an off road model and the springs could very well be progressive

    Yes, they are from a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road.
    I was thinking same as you, regarding doing the front and see how it looks, since this 4runner has a lot of rake.

    Are the eyelets in the front shocks the same size on a 4th gen 4Runner as a 3rd gen Taco? Might need to press in some new bushings if not.

    As per my research, only the rear shocks need new bushings. Fronts are plug and play.

    I can confirm this, I have 18 trd or front and rears on with fj coils. The front is direct the rear requires 9.8108G 3/4 eye bushing. Easy install and better than stock but mine still has a little sway to it! Curious as to how the billies work in the rear!

    The sway could be from the progressive coils. or that you dont have the rear matching shocks?

    You could see if there are some SR5 coils available from a third gen Tacoma. I know the 2016 Tacoma I traded in had linear springs. That is if it doesn't quite feel the same after adding the rear shocks

    The rear Tacoma shocks don’t handle the rear weight of the 4runner very well which is why it happens. It was a huge improvement from the worn out xreas but not quite as nice as Toytec or more expensive setup

    Finally, today I changed front coil over.
    Measurement before and after:
    FRONT LEFT
    ( ground to fender)
    Before 32-3/8 after 34-7/8
    Center to fender
    Before 18-1/4 after 20-3/4
    FRONT RIGHT
    ( Ground to fender)
    Before 32-1/2 after 35
    Center to fender
    Before 18-1/8 after 20-5/8

    Total lift is 2-1/2"

    Just received Bilsteins 36-281817 rear coils. Preparing for a fun Saturday.
    Also got 1/4" and 1/2" thick spacer to level the front and get 1/2" average additional lift.

    Finally Bilsteins B12 36-281817 are in. Could not change the shocks due to not being able to change the bushings. Ride feels a little firmer than OEM.

    Today I changed rear Tacoma shocks with a pair of Bilsteins 4600 24-188401 ( got free). The Tacoma shocks don't stop vehicle bouncing when loaded.
    Will probably do the same with front shocks.

    Added a 1/2" spacer in front to level and get good space for new 275/70R17. This is how she is sitting now, center to fender.
    Front 21-1/2"
    Rear 22-1/2"

    Pretty happy with handling of suspension.

    Hi,

    Did you have to get new upper bushings for your rear shocks? The hole in the frame is about 1/8 inch larger than the bushing on the Blistein shocks that I have. I already replaced the lower bushing with the 3/4 dia ones, but the top bushing seems too small and is loose in the hole in the frame. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    The TRD OR shocks from 3rd gen Tacos are softer than the TRD Sport - have you seen anyone use those instead?

    I end up changing the rear Tacoma shocks, they where too soft, 4Runner keep bouncing with them.

    I know this is a few years old but just a quick question; I bought a 2007 4Runner with only 75k miles. Great condition and rust free. I did the suspension swap with a 2023 tacoma off-road coilovers up front and bilstein 4600 specific rears. I'm going to be adding the Bilstein coils in back. Depending on how it stands after I put the coils in, I'll see if I want to add the 1/2" and 1/4" spacers up front.

    In your opinion, were the spacers worth it? Notice any ride quality differences? And lastly, what spacers are they and where did you buy them? I'm assuming you put the 1/2" on the driver side and the 1/4" on the passenger side?

    Thanks so much for your write-up. It was a huge help for me deciding how to upgrade the suspension from the old X-REAS setup.

    I used 1/2" spaces on both sides, did it to get the full 3" lift. I didn't use the 1/4" to level since there is not enought thread left. Ride quality is perfect.

    You may already know this but spacers give double their size in lift due to the front end geometry. So a 1/2" spacer gives 1" lift vs. no spacer. Also, I love this thread b/c the Tacoma take-off route was the first big mod I did after buying my '07 in 2014. Spent a grand total of $200 for 2015 TRD Offroad coilovers and rear shocks and FJ springs for the rear. Loved it and eventually did it again with 2020 TRD Offroad components except I used the 4R specific 4600s on the rear. That was also a great setup. Decided to go all new components for my most recent refresh with Eibach all around and it's terrific. Highly recommend the Tacoma route or Eibach as great 4th Gen suspension options. Anyone interested in the whole journey can see it .

    Agreed. The Tacoma take-off suspension lift route is the best bang for the buck way of getting some lift for cheap. Great for new owners that aren't ready to spend the $$ on higher end stuff but still want a well performing lift.

    Yes, I got 2-1/2" lift only out of the Tacoma Coilover. The 1/2" spacer actually provided 3/4" additional lift. The 2 to 1 rule is approximated.
