How is yours treating you?
The only things I've done to ours is Grabber AT2s, TRD air filter, and Yakima roof rack. But it's been doing great. And taken a couple partial cross country trips(VA to WI to VA x2)

 

other than upgrading the interior and fog lights to LED nothing else oh and a new windshield coming this week as I caught a rock Friday.......

 

Ouch. I caught one last summer that I was able to seal with the repair kit from auto zone.
Then of course I caught one right after I fixed the first one.
Neither one spidered like yours did.

FYI if its smaller than a dollop bill it can most likely be repaired.

P.S. are you still on TW?

 

Unfortunately its getting replaced the location where it hit and is damaged is right on the windshield heater element and it is damaged as well.

Came out of a 2011 Tundra Rock Warrior crew cab with a Trd supercharger with 175000 miles

Gas mileage was 10 mpg and I drive 50k a year

 

Had a 2014 Platinum Tundra ordered when they first hit the lots late 2013. I loved that truck and didn't think it was possible to like something more. The T4R has changed my mind … something about the combo of size/shape fun factor over a ginormous boat that was more of chore than it should be. Still a huge fan of the Tundra and it's 5.7 powerhouse.

 

Was enjoying 05-2012 Nissan Pathfinders until 2013 when the styling changed. Gawd that was an awful design decision in my opinion. With dogs, I had to have operable rear glass...….the Xterra didn't have that, a Tahoe was too $$$, a mess once you yank out the 3rd row seating and felt like driving a planet. After getting stuck in the pathfinder 2wd a couple of times, I was ready to get a 4wd. The 4R fit the bill nicely and even though it's the most I've ever spent, it's been worth it and I have no regrets.

 

I needed a vehicle that could carry four passengers, plus my giant dog, and tow a utility trailer with a UTV in it.

My 2005 Yukon started having things go wrong with it every month at only 100k miles, so I looked at the 4Runner. I wanted a reasonably capable off-road vehicle that was absolutely reliable, truck-based, and under $40k.

I actually looked at buying a 4Runner a few years ago and nearly pulled the trigger, but the Toyota dealer wouldn't budge on the price and tried to screw me on the trade-in, so I walked.

Wanted to get back into a pickup and looked hard at the Tundra, but the 4Runner was better for daily driving and weekend trips into the mountains.

 

In 2017, I bought a 2015 Tacoma, TRDOR. it was an awesome truck, but I had a few gripes. I came to realize that everything I liked about it reminded me of my previous 4runner. And, everything I disliked about it made me miss my 4runner.

The cool thing is that the Tacoma caused me to join Tacomaworld, where I've met some really great people. I still hang out there quite a bit.

The Tacoma, being an off-road package, encouraged me to check out some trails, which has become one of my favorite things to do!

Late last year, a dealership near me put a TRD Pro 4runner out front, where I drive past it almost daily. I couldn't take it anymore, so I started doing some research.

Once I finally drove one with KDSS, it was over! I managed to walk out of the dealership that day and do some more research. Two weeks later I went back and bought the same one I drove!

First pic is from the dealership when I traded in my '03. Second is from when I traded the Tacoma in for the new 4runner. Third is how it sits now. I love this thing!

 

I was a Jeep guy since 1985 when I bought my '85 Cherokee. Then I got a '93 Grand Cherokee then an '05 Grand Cherokee. I loved them but it seems at around 140,000 to 150,000 miles they start wearing out, stuff going wrong. My son got a 2016 4Runner and loves it. After riding in his my decision was made that when the time came I'd jump the Jeep bandwagon and go Toyota. That time was this past Feb. I'm 66 so I'm thinking with Toyota's legendary dependability this truck will most likely outlast me! If I got 14 years out of a Jeep, 20 years or so should be no problem with the Runner. At least I hope I have another 20 years in me!

Another ex-Jeeper here. Just sold my 2004 TJ Rubicon, don't plan on another Jeep.

I've also been driving a Tacoma since 2005, had several 1st and 2nd gen Tacos, the current one, a 2013 TRD OR Access Cab 4x4 bought new in 2013. Great truck, but I don't use it as a truck anymore, and have seriously been considering getting a T4R. It's the only vehicle I'd trade my Tacoma for. Been looking for several months, thinking of a low-mileage 2016 - 2018...trying to read up on everything I can on 4Runners...

Also have been on Tacomaworld since 2008.

Coming from a 2013 Wrangler unlimited lifted 3” on fox suspension and 35s, bought it brand new put 150,000 miles on it in just under 7 years and loved every minute of it but she was getting old and keeping up maintaining it was getting pretty old too.

Decided to go test drive the 2020 gladiator because I was almost set on it since before it even came out. Long story short it just didn’t do it for me and I planned on test driving other vehicles before I purchased it anyway. Test drove the Tacoma trd pro which was way to small for me and a 4Runner trd sport which I was impressed with. Waited a few days and found a trd pro at a local dealership for under msrp, so I went in and saw the 2019 trd pro in voodoo blue on the showroom floor and I was sold..

Drove home with her the next day and haven’t looked back since.

 

I had a '96 and loved it but was dumb and got rid of it with 190k on it. Too young and not enough internet knowledge to know it would last forever. After a brand new Jeep fiasco, I went to a 2nd gen taco. Loved it but needed more interior room for a cross country trip, so we bought a '14 FJ. I always regretted getting rid of my 96 4r so I traded the FJ in after 4 years for only 2k less than what I paid for it.

 

The wifey was on year 3 if her last new car so she was ready to upgrade. She knew she wanted an SUV and started looking around. She had pretty much made her mind up on a land rover until she seen a lifted 4runner and that was all it took. She told me if she got a 4R that I had to put a lift kit and new wheels and tires on the first week of ownership. So she bought it and I did the lift and wheels tires. She absolutely loves her 4R and gets complimented everywhere she goes. But she now wants more than a 3” lift and way bigger tires. Ugh

 

Don't do it. Going to be a big pain in the ass going above 3".

 

I can easily do the job but The 35” tires will add a lot of unnecessary wear to the 4R that wouldn’t be good for it. I’d also have to regear it for a large added expense. I’m gonna talk her out of it.

 

Because I had a Gen 3 SR5, a Gen 4.1 Limited, a Gen 4.2 Limited and a Gen 5.1 Limited before this one. Granted I strayed in there a few times. Explorer, Escape, '10 F150 Raptor and a '15 Mustang GT PP. Thought my '13 was gonna be my last vehicle ... 'til I saw this sucker in the showroom. DANG! Payments again. LOL!

 

I had a 16 3rd gen. Tacoma

It was a early build beta from the Baja plant, and pretty much everything that could go wrong did, 3 safety recalls, leaking third brake light twice, more transmission TSBs than I care to remember. Being a loyal Toyota guy I stuck with it, until I retired and moved from New England to SoCal.
In New England it hardly ever gets real hot so I could just put the boys in the back.

Now playing in the desert and doing stuff in SoCal they need the A/C, and we like keeping them where we can interact with them on long trips. So the 4Runner was a no brainer

Even with all its issues and frustrations I was still a Tacoma fan, but definitely liking the 4Runner better.
I also was lucky that I was able to recoup some of the money I had put into the Tacoma, with a buyer that was looking for a Christmas present to give his Utah ski instructor son, that already had the modifications done.

 

The search goes on so I can actually answer the question "Why did you buy your 5th Gen T4R?"

In researching, I've found that the closest I can find to what I just sold (2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon) and my current 2013 Off Road TRD 4x4 Tacoma in capability for a 4Runner would be the the current TRD Off Road. What I have wondered, since there are no previously owned TRD Off Roads near me, is how is the rear diff lock engaged, as in, where is the switch?

Also, I've read about the Crawl Control and Multi-terrain select, but again, I don't see those controls on any of the interior photos viewed of a 2019 T4R TRD Off Road model...anyone have any input into where those are? Sorry for the ignorant questions, I just want to know what to look for when shopping for a 4Runner...

Edit: Never mind. I finally realized those switches/controls are on the console above the mirror...I would, however, like some input into how owners have found those to be particularly useful (or not). Thanks!

 

I've used multi terrain select. In 4LO with multi terrain, It goes through everything I've attempted effortlessly. I think, with good tires, the only thing that would stop it would be getting high centered, or buried in mud.

I tried crawl control, but it wasn't slow enough for what I was doing. I've seen some videos of 4runners and Tacomas getting out of being stuck using it. I hope to not need it, but I'm glad it's there

 

Due to terrible back pain (herniated discs), I needed a larger vehicle. Crawling in the back of my Tc to put a toddler in her car seat hurt so much. Originally I wanted a 3rd gen Taco, but couldn't afford it. Got the 4runner instead. After hearing all the horror stories of the 3rd gen taco's, I realized I lucked out! It is a fun bubbly ride. One of these days I'll get around to making a build page...

 

The only reason I bought my 4Runner is that I couldn't buy a brand new FJ Cruiser. When I decided it was time to sell my '10 FJ, the 'Runner was the only choice...I'm still second guessing myself on that decision.

 

Why?

 

The interior feels roomier in the FJ. Power/torque for my needs is a wash. I like the FJ styling more than the 4Runner. Don't get me wrong, I love my 4Runner, and it was the only choice for me. Oh yeah, my FJ was Army Green and paid off! On the up side, my Runner is lifted on 285's, I have a roof rack on order, and am shopping bumpers. It's new, with a warranty, and has a bunch of the shiny things that the FJ didn't have. The 4Runner will be a great truck for me for a long time...I just need some catus/4Runner bonding time with it.

 

I can't argue with that. I think you just get used to a car and have a hard time adjusting to anything else.

When I traded in my '03 for my Tacoma, I was constantly nitpicking it. It was a perfectly good truck, just not a 4runner. My 4runner felt right since day 1, and I love it more every time I drive it.

I think it will grow on you. I never really checked out the FJ cruiser, but the 4runner is as close as it gets. Pretty much the exact same truck with a different body.

 

I have a FJ-40 in the garage too, so I had new and old FJ's. Maybe I should paint a white top on my 4Runner! Nah, that wouldn't be right...
