    Greetings.

I have a 99 Surf/4Runner. I went into a shop to discuss installation of Dobinsons shocks and springs all the way round. Guy rolled underneath because I also asked to have bushings replaced for steering rack. He came out suggesting a rack and pinion replacement. Being a novice regarding rack and pinion I sort of have to take his word for it. There is some movement in a tie rod when you grab it and turn the wheels, but I don't really know if it's supposed to be like that or not. The boot on driver's side (psgr side in US) has no clamp on the inside end either.

The vehicle has 190K on it and the roads are tough here in Mozambique and South Africa. So, I want to know how do I really determine if the R&P needs replacing? Also, what about the power steering pump? Should I consider replacing it since all this is going to be disconnected if I replace the R&P?

Also, recommendations about which R&P parts to buy too. Not sure what the independent shop will source here. Is this an overly difficult job on this vehicle? Wondering how much time the shop should spend on it?

    Thank you all.
