Had new black rims in my cart online today and figured I'd better save some money and just coat the factory ones for now. They turned out awesome and they look amazing. Looks much, much better, especially with the factory blacked out emblems and side steps.

Nice looking for sure, And way cheaper than new rims... I thought of doing this but with the coating I put on my rims nothing sticks to them LOL ...

one word of caution......be very careful when and if you apply Armour All (or similar products) to your tires. I had a Mustang with dipped wheels. Looked great until I got Armour All over spray on the wheels, it melted the Plastidip very quickly.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.
Thanks for this post. I'm thinking of just painting around the "windows" but seeing them all black makes me second guess that. Looks so much better than all silver.

How do you properly clean/remove break dust without damaging the plastidip?

I used my pressure washer to remove the plastidip when I saw how easily damaged it was. That was a few years ago. Maybe there is a sealant that can be applied. I don't know. I considered powder coating my stock SR5 wheels in flat black but instead bought TRD wheels. I will never plastidip again.

This is not my first use of Plasti-Dip and my past experience with it does not mirror what others are saying.

I first used it on my 2014 Ram. First on the stock rims, and second on the hood. With those rims, I used a light grit sanding block to lightly scuff the finish. On the hood, I did no sanding at all.

While I replaced the rims with aftermarket ones within a few months, I did not experience any flaking or other issues. I just sold them a couple of weeks ago out of storage and they still looked fine. The hood was done the same time as the rims and while there was some minor flaking from road debris after two years, it held up pretty good.

I ran through automatic car washes regularly and there was no special treatment of the hood, other than avoiding concentrated pressure spraying of it.

This was a couple of weeks before it was traded in, and after two years of abuse...

    IMG_20180408_104716022_HDR.jpg

And these are the stock rims from a couple of weeks ago...

I used around 3.5 cans and did a couple of layers. It took letting them sit overnight before you could handle them. I did not scuff the finish on these rims. I simply used a paper towel to quickly wipe them down and remove any trace of dirt.

We'll see how long it lasts.

I painted the all silver rims on my '05 Grand Cherokee with matte wheel paint. 3 coats of paint and two clear. I had the truck for 6 years after I did that and never had a problem except a few scuffs that were easy to touch up. I used a red Scotch Brite pad to give the paint something to "bite" into. This is what I'll do with the Runner too. PlastiDip is fine for temporary work if you want to see if something will work for you, not permanent and lasting.

Ran through an automatic car wash today and they came out looking fine. The big test will be running them on gravel and dirt roads this Friday.

Another big test is when you have someone put new tires on them.

I plastidipped my wheels too. Also did the side of my running boards. Want to dip my roof rack next. Just got my windows tinted last weekend.

How did you tighten the lug nuts back on without stripping the plastidip?

I left the wheels on when I painted them. I did the garbage bag inside the wheel method. There are videos on youtube that show you how to do it. Once I get new tires I will upgrade to black locking lug nuts

I used a deep well socket and an extension to hand tighten the lug nuts very carefully, then tightened them up with the ratchet.

Learned the hard way on the first lug nut to be more slow.

Any issues with chemicals? Thinking about how to clean off brake dust and stuff used to remove the brown discoloration on tires. Not sure how well plastidip holds up to that kinda stuff.

Yeah, but that dyc guy has a raging clue for plastidip. I tend to avoid his videos. 16 minute video breaks down to 10 minuts of intro/outro/repeating info. Somewhere in there is 6 minutes of the info you are looking for.

    Part of that is YouTube.
They will not monetize videos under 10ish minutes.
    Always about the money.
Because they are low on money!

    What's better about it?

Not being argumentative here. Just genuinely curious about the differences between the 2 products.

It’s much smoother finish and little bit glossy looks much better than Plastidip IMO that’s all I got lol ..
