To Pro or Not to Pro?

    New member, tacoworld refugee, determined to get out of my taco.

    Have a 2019 VooDoo Blue lined up, brand new. Just can’t decide if I want to wait for the ‘20s. Main reasons for me to wait, Push Button Start, Apple CarPlay.

    Couple questions:

    1) Realistic, estimated availability/order date of the 2020 Pro?

    2) Any common areas of issue to look at for flaws when purchasing? Example, Tacoma’s its chunks of crap in the paint, bed misaligned, etc.

    I hated the Toyota TSS on the Avalon I drove So hell no to a 2020 for me. I'd get the 2019.

    I feel that the 4runners are made much better than the tacomas. No real issues that I'm aware of.

    Order date will probably be around Sept or October? I'm not sure about that. Availability I'm not sure. I purchased my pro used.

    Don’t have it on my taco, just the blindspot monitor and backup sensors, both I like. The other nanny features I could def do without.

    I’ve placed a deposit with a dealer for a 2020 Army Green, they didn’t have a date for the vehicle and I really didn’t expect them to. I’m after the 2020 basically for the color, the upgrades are relatively minor although the screen size increase is nice. The TSS stuff can get annoying, but doesn’t outweigh the color for me.....

    Just my opinion. I have 17 Pro bought new. I have had a lot of Toyota trucks. Loved them all. To me push button no big deal. My 19 Z06 has Apple car play. I like it. I don’t mind not having it in my Pro. My entune and Nav works very well. Plus I also use my iPhone with the maps.

    Why waste the extra money on some badging, grille, and not much better than 6112’s suspension? Get a TRD ORP, it’s the same truck minus the crap fox suspension, badging, and grille.

    Instead of contributing to the discussion, you've bashed OP's choice in whatever vehicle they want.

    I didn't feel waiting for the 2020 was worth it and I got a great deal on my 19 Voodoo Blue. I didn't think the TSS was worth it, there are similar systems in my sister's Lexus NX and I find it annoying. Push to start and keyless entry is a nice to have, my last car had it and I miss it a lot, but not worth waiting 5+ months for.

    My opinion I think the Pro is the better way to go if you like it just the way it is. I had my 2015 Tacoma done up with all mods and removed them and sold them. I did not want to go thru that again with the 4Runner. Also I love the value it holds. Also you don’t see many around depending where you live.

    Bashed? No. Provided logic and reason? Yes.

    My post listed the exact reasons why I chose not to buy a pro. There’s absolutely no sense in paying $10k extra for some cosmetics which provide no additional function over form.

    With the Pro you'd also be paying the additional 10k for upgraded parts that have a factory warranty. That alone made it worth the price for me. When you spend 2/3k on aftermarket suspension and one of your dampers fails, you're on the hook for the rebuild or replacement. I've spent tons of time modifying sports cars to know that having factory warrantied parts is worth paying more up front, and the Pro is already a quite capable car, not sure where you're getting "crap fox suspension" from.

    Been driving, building, and wheeling Toyota’s since 1992. The Fox suspension on the Pro is bottom of the rung quality compared the aftermarket options available.

    this is my first car that isn't a sports car, so I'm still pretty new to the scene. I've been building racecars to compete in NASA Time trials and Gridlife time attack since I was 16.
    Of course OEM stuff is crap compared to aftermarket options, that is an absolute given. but wheeling last weekend with some friends who also have 4Rs and 3" lifts and upgraded aftermarket suspension, my Pro was able to complete every single trail I followed them through. I wouldn't call it bottom of the rung, it isn't as crap as you're saying, but for someone who has no intention of modifying the 4R, it exceeded all of my expectations, and it has a factory warranty.

    Can't you turn most TSS features off?

    I believe you can. Not sure on the T4R, but I know on my wife’s 19 Camry XSE, it has to be disabled every time she starts the car. The only thing she doesn’t have to disable each time is the lane departure.

    Just be ready for $50K+mark up if you decide to get a 2020 pro. Also, the quality of the paint on the 4runner is subpar if that is your main concern, they chip easily especially if you drive a lot on the highway.

    On a serious note, the 2020 pro can be a good purchase(if you are able to pay MSRP or below) since Toyota added push start, apple/android car play, TSS and a bigger screen. The new Fox suspension with internal bypass technology is a big upgrade from the previous Bilstein 6112/5160, but if you don't wheel often, you won't notice the difference between the two.

    The thing is that we don't know if other trims will be equipped with apple play and push start especially the trd off road, if that is the case, you are better off with a trd off road unless you are really into the exclusive color of the trd pro. Otherwise,you should get a trd pro and leave it as it is.

    That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming. I'm sure the 4Runner will allow you to disable most items as well.

    Not too hard to press a couple of buttons if TSS is bothersome.

    Pretty nice to have auto braking if someone runs a red light through an intersection and you're not feeling up to getting t-boned that day.

    I like the voodoo, and don’t get me wrong, but I do wonder what it’d be like seeing it every day.

    Anyone know the vertical height of the roof rack on the pro? Just dawned on me it may not fit in the garage......

    What’s most important to me is the value and options....
    I like the wheels/tires, the jbl I can manage without wanting to upgrade audio, good suspension (for what I’ll use it for), upgraded grill/skid plate. There’s 7k out of pocket immediately after purchase except no Pro on the title.

    The truly keyless entry is handy when hunting, not having to dig through 3 layers to hit unlock.

    Caveat to the whole deal is the dam roof rack, I doubt it’ll fit in the garage and the VooDoo has key me written all over it, at least where we live.......right on the border of sanity and GFY.

    I will say that the lane departure is freaking dangerous when those concrete barriers are up on the highway or when the lane shifts because of construction. You have to fight the car to merge over.

    I haven't driven a Toyota with lane departure, but my wife's car has it (Subaru Outback). It's the only safety feature I don't like, but it's always off unless you turn it on.

    The adaptive cruise control is awesome on trips, blindspot monitoring is a nice feature, and the backup sensor and auto braking are truly lifesavers.

    Get a limited :)

    Use the money that you saved in incentives and negotiating to put a nice lift on it and ditch the OEM 20s for some trail or pro 17s.
