I am a noob to the forum but I want a rooftop tent. Can the stock rack support the weight or should I get an after market rack?? Any help would be appreciated

The only number I could locate was for the cross bars at "165lbs evenly distributed". I can't find anything on the rack itself.

I’ve seen people remove the cross bars and mount the tent to the rails that run the length of the 4Runner. Another option is either yakima or Thule cross bars.

For Yakima it’s the timberline towers and the bars that go across. Not sure on the Thule names or part’s.

I know one 4R member on tacomaworld has her RTT mounted to Thule bars and the factory rails (not cross bars)

I had watched something on this, on YouTube. The guy was saying that the weight limit is a dynamic weight limit. (Meaning, driving around) He went on to say that the static weight limit is actually much more.

Totally makes sense, I thought... I was also thinking about a roof top tent, even before any suspension. I know, not really much information. Lol

You should hear a roof rack with stuff on it. Then a bare rack will seem quiet.

I guess I didn't mean wind noise, in general. More of a howl or resonance sound. Apparently it goes away if you add some load. But not good for those that generally travel as an unloaded daily driver.

If you loop a bungee cord around the 1st crossbar in a circular pattern from one side rail to the other, you will substantially reduce the wind noise. This goes for other racks that make a lot of noise as well.

You can also just take them off when you don't have your RTT up there. I don't think they take that much time to take off/re-install.

ok so I saw other posts on the LFD cross bars, but if you are using the OEM rails I don't think you can put a tend up on it. from what I read the OEM rails are only weighted for 175Lbs no matter what cross bars you put on. Or am I incorrect on what I have read? I mean think of it 1-2 people a tent and a piece of ply if your doing a DYI roof tent is more than 300LBS.

Even I would like more clarification on this because this is what I am working up to doing with my 4runner.

Interesting. I wonder if it would fit the LFD crossbars.

there are lots of fairings from different vendors. I don't know how all of these fit, but surely you can find one that has/can attach to the LFD bars

Rago has similar bars and although I'm not familiar with LFD, I think both of these have lots of attachment options

I came here with pretty much the same questions. I just bought a new 2020 with dealer installed roof rack and crossbars. the manual says 120# limit! I’m transferring rooftop luggage carrier from 2007 Highlander which will be fine, but wanted to add rooftop tent instead. But can’t get any clear guidelines on what the roof will actually hold!

I get the dynamic vs static weight argument but that still doesn’t tell me how to calculate the static weight.

    thoughts? Suggestions? Real world examples?

Start adding weight to your roof rack. When the roof begins to buckle, subtract 10 pounds.

i use a RTT on factory roof rack and rails. no problems. nothing crazy wheeling wise, but 30 mile and hour rough fire roads. no issue. I did replace the thumb screws with machine head hex screws.

Artec makes some nice rails that work on the stock rack https://www.artecindustries.com/ty4r5g-crossrails that I have considered. All roof racks add wind noise, some more than others. The better ones include wind fairings in their design that probably help. The trouble with the stock rack is that its not exactly strong. The low profile racks offered by the after market are eminently preferable, and look better, IMHO. Some of the good ones are Victory 4X4, Front Runner, Baja. Prinsu is usually included, but I've seen some negative reviews on here about their quality. Front Runner, in particular is strong, and well made and comes with solid expedition cred. Of course, its expensive, especially all the accessories, which are cool.
