Roof Rack

I hope not to need it at all, but with hurricane season coming i would like the option of having some extra space. Not sure how cost effective it will be. The cross bars are like 70.00 each that s like 320.00 shipped for four of them. Plus another 200.00 ( probably cheaper) others a good chunk of a full rack.

 

From what I can see, I would still need to get a cargo basket or something... Maybe. SSO I is just a flat deck. I'm new to this whole roof rack deal.

 

I have decided I am just going to get the full rack but that is only because I am probably going to get a RTT in the future. If I was not going that direction, $320 is a heck of a lot cheaper than $1000 plus. Another option is LFD's 3/4 rack. Very nice but still double the cross bars....

But you can always expand the rack for future needs with the LFD cross bars, so there is that....


Hey on a side note (and slight thread derail, sorry) are you the one with the Eibach pro kit and JBA upper control arms?

 

I'm looking at LFD, sent them an email as I didn't see the 3/4 length on the web page. Oh , yes. I'm running Eibach and JBA.

 

Ahhh, yeah I see what you mean, they may have dropped the 3/4 rack since the 7/8th's is about the same size. It still costs slightly more to buy the cross bars, then the side rails and more cross bars, but it is a neat system that can be expanded as your needs expand.

As mentioned I am probably just going to go full rack. An now they make an all aluminum version. The SSO is a great rack also but a lot more money than just the cross bars. For your situation I would just buy the cross bars and be done and then you can always expand in the future to the 7/8th's if the need arises.

And you don't necessarily need to bolt a rack to the cross bars. Those LFD cross bars are very versatile. You can always just bolt some eyelets to it so you have some good tie down points for your bugout gear.

 

Last thing I want when doing a load plan is worrying about if/where to use extra hardware. The cross bars will stay in place, but when/if I need it the rack will go up.

Same this was my first choice however I know I won’t be able to utilize it but for looks YES! It’s just too costly so I eneded up being thrifty and went ROLA and to my surprise I get lots of compliments but of course I’m still dreaming of Gobi and I’m so jealous everytime I see good roof racks in the road.

 

I see no problems with it, other than maybe fitting in the garage.

 

I’ve always liked the look of those. I’ve heard of a lowering kit for those, have you?

 

The Gobi? Yes they are low profile roof rack however it takes months for shipment because they are back ordered.
I have the Gobi Ladder though.

Yes, you can mount those Rola racks a bit lower than the standard height. There was a thread about it not too long ago. You either get some different mounting hardware or you turn the mounting hardware they provide you with upside down. I can't remember exactly how people are doing it, but it looks really good set closer to the roof.

 

Yes and no. A company makes brackets for a lower install, but it's for the 4th gen rails. I believe. They will work on the 5the gen if you install them upside down. From the pics I have seen it only drops the rack about a 1/2 inch. But using the $80.00 (set of four angled aluminum with U bolts) allows you to mount the Rola without cross bars. On your deflector did you add the strip that touches the roof to prevent scratches or did that come with it?

 

Hi! I actually just added it as an aftermarket piece that I purchased off Amazon. It is to help with the whistle from the wind when driving at higher speeds. I couldn't stand how loud it was with my sunroof open.

Looks great. What size (length/width) the rack. My wife and I are looking for this type of rack for our 2017 4runner. We mostly carry a canoe but occasionally have the back loaded up tight and could use a little extra space for the non-weather critical stuff.
