    Hi All,

What are the largest tires that I can put on my stock 5th gen 4x4, limited 20” wheels? I don’t really want to change the stock setup on my truck, but, just need to have a better stance.

I may upgrade my shocks in the future, but going with something that can be adjusted to add an inch or two. But, that will be it.

Does anyone have any similar upgrade or suggestions? Thanks.

275/55/20 is what most people say for stock but....I have heard some say they will rub slightly in reverse at full lock and some say no issues at all. I would love to see a poll on this. Also be aware that 275/55/20 technically exceeds the maximum width for your 7" wheels. (7.5 is the minimum recommended wheel width for 275's) Many are running them but you will have to decide if its worth the risk perceived or otherwise. You will also increase the unsprung weight on each corner by going bigger which can impact gas mileage and acceleration if that matters.

@ridetime Thanks for the information. It’s interesting to know that 275s may rub. Based on your info, it does seem like I will need to definitely mode the suspension if I want the bigger wheels. I don’t mind losing a few miles per gallon due to the added wheel size.

Also, I am now wondering if going bigger, say 275, 285, 295, or 305 will require higher gears? That would definitely compensate for the bigger tires. I believe that it would also help my tranny. Any thoughts?

I would start thinking about gears with anything over 285s.

We went with the toyo open country 275/55r20. Very happy with the look. Definitely more aggressive than the stock bridgestone dueler 245/60r20. They do however rub ever so slightly when we are in reverse while turning.

On their tire retail website, Toyota lists 275/55/20 as an optional size tire for the Limited.

It looks really nice. Is the rubbing coming from the body/cab mounts, or the wheel well plastic?

Rubbing is on the wheel well plastic.

@jasehock Yup, I hear it up with a heat gun, then reshape it. Thanks for the update.

Thank you... I'll have to get someone that has done that kind of stuff before. Although i'm pretty handy with hammer, drill, and saw with wood working, I have no experience with a heat gun and plastic.

YW. It’s not hard to do at all. Put a little heat on the plastic from the heat gun, then use something to push it in a little bit at a time. Check the clearance and repeat the process if necessary. Here is a clip from YouTube, that shows you how simple it is to do it.

Do you have a before and after? Did your gas stay the same? Did you put a lift on it or is it stock?

275/55/20 gives you roughly the same size tire as stock, so they fit and many people offer AT tires in this size, but the width of the LE wheel limits you from some options

Also, the tire sidewall thickness is much lower than most AT tires, so it can be jarring; many people prefer moving down to a 17 size wheel to get "bigger" tires, but in any case you're severely limited in overall tire size without changing something in your suspension and maybe cutting the body mount to get more clearance

we haven’t notices a difference in gas or in the ride itself. It’s still just as smooth. This toyo open country tire is a p rated tire. Which supposedly is a smooth ride.

I have Toyo Open Country 275 55/r20 on my 2011 Toyota Four runner Limited and bought them 6 years ago. Still look good but starting to crack a bit so getting ready to buy new ones. Love them. Didn't notice much gas difference and ride was smooth. Worth the price..

Nice. Have you noticed any rubbing on large bumps, at full lock moving forward/backing, etc.?

What size did you go with on these? Same?

Also curious if anyone's gone with anything between 245 --> 275 and bumped the ratio up also? Stock limited is 60, so what about 75 for example? I'm in uncharted territory myself, so this might be nonsense. Just trying to get bigger looking tires that won't rub constantly. I'm good with some in reverse at full lock or whatever...

I've had my 275/55/20's w/ stock Limited wheels for a year. Less than 1/2 an inch taller but over 1 inch wider. Mine rub only slightly in reverse with the wheels turned left.

You do have to remember that not all installers will mount the 275's on the limited wheel since it is only 7 inches wide so ask that question when you're shopping.

I mounted Michelin LTX M/S2 275/60/20 on my stock 20” wheels a couple years ago. Has a 3”/1.5” leveling kit and 1.25” spacers. It’s my wife’s truck so I can’t go too mod-crazy...just going for a modest “OEM+” look.

Nightshade wheels are 7.5 in width.
I just purchased one 275/55r20 for spare, which fits that space fine. But not sure if I am confident to proceed with ordering 4 new ones as I would be somewhat annoyed to hear rubbing

why not go with 255/60r20 instead ?

I went with the XL (4-ply) and the ride is great. Not many miles on them but am very pleased with them. If you’re considering this tire size, just do it. Changes the whole look and the speedometer stays within 1-2mph of actual

Hi Tennessee Keeler, how is the ride compare to the stock geolander g096 tires and do you feel any improvement in the ride quality. I was thinking of changing for larger tire or reducing to 17inch. to get a better ride.

I was also considering dropping down to the TRD 17 and running a larger tire. However, since the Ridge Grappler comes in a 4 ply, I knew I could keep the 20s.

I just did a 3 hour trip this weekend and I personally think the ride is great, if not better than it was with the old geolanders. They have a 10 ply version but I felt that was overkill for the towing and hauling capabilities of the 4Runner and would produce a harsh ride.

    Hi Tennesee,

thank for the answer, I just found 4 trail 17inch wheel, I think I will go this way because of the choice and little less harsh ride.
