Any suggestions on how to protect the bottom of my T4R from salt (snow and beach)??

I’m from south Jersey. What’s new out there 4runner world?

 

I've heard fluid film but never used it myself. A good fresh water spray down aftet each outing helps.

 

I have not heard of fluid film and i just checked it on YouTube. Thanks for the info. I will def apply.

 

Fluid Film, they run specials every so often. I’ve got a 5gal bucket in my closet, lol.

Has anyone applied using the 11.75oz can? If so, how many cans do I need for complete application?

 

I use rust check, took 8 cans to do the floor and frame. I follow that by about 2 quarts in my gun for interior sheet metal panels and inside the frame using various wand attachments.

You don't want to skimp on the initial application, any areas not treated will become blatantly apparent after a winter or two (NS, Canada)

 

New to the site and just got a 2018 4Runner and just kinda looking around, I like your tire size.

do you have a level/lift?
Do your tires rub?
What size tires did you go with?

 

Another option is move to AZ, NM or SW TX.

 

Jacksonsride: my tires are the same size as stock 265/70/17. No lift therefore no rubbing. I would love to get it lifted it in the future tho.
Tires are BFG KO2s.

 

Last fall I had a fluid film dealer do a complete application to my new 2017 T4R, mainly because of the whole me not having a vehicle lift in my garage thing. It was $250 which I thought was worth it because the guy went nuts, he lowered the spare and sprayed that compartment, even took off the skid plates and sprayed those compartments and the under sides of the plates! He said he would do a touch up this fall for $50. Yes fluid film has a lingering smell kind of like burning chemical, but you get used to it...to me it was money well spent. That seems like a great price. I just called my local dealer here in north nj and he wanted $450!!

 

I do mine every year with the cans. I don't do the floor, just the frame, driveshafts, axles, and suspension. Takes about 5 cans usually. It is kind of a pain because I do not have a lift. I pull the 4 over a big tarp, gown up in a throw away paint suit, put on the respirator, and go to town. The undercarriage on mine looks brand new after two salty winters

 

Hi. 4Paw. I'm just curious how the fluid film has held up? Would you do it again? Have you had any problems with the factory underbody paint peeling?

Whats up, man. I'm in Philly. I need to do fluid film or something of the sort as well. I'm gonna check out that link for the dealers, but may just do it myself.

I did notice a small spot of rust near the back bumper on the frame...whats the best option here? sand and spray paint any rust areas, then just coat with fluid film?

 

What’s the difference between the woolwax and fluid film? Either of them can do the under protection right?

 

I have not noticed any peeling, Fluid Film doesn't dry out. It is basically an oily residue, so don't get the undercarriage wash if you get this treatment. I had it touched up in fall of 2018 and the cost was $125, higher than anticipated. He told me (and I've no reason to doubt this man) he used over a gallon...here in salty New England I figure the more FF the better. I will continue to do the Fall touchups at Wakefield Auto Clinic.

I was not aware of Woolwax when I first did the Fluid Film. I see both are lanolin based corrosion inhibitors. I kind of got sold on the history of FF from their website - says the US Navy has used FF on their ships for 50 years. FF has a good rep on T4R.org which was also I source I checked out.

 

Hilarious avatar. I'm not much of an expert on rust repair, sorry, but do a search on Utube. I can tell you that Fluid Film is available by the can on Amazon for less than $20.

 

I should use FF since I have my front mud guard off now after lift and bigger tires. I don’t have any snow here in Cali but for protection just in case if I go out in a snowy or sandy beaches. Thanks man!

I've used Fluid Film in the past with success; although, I never liked the fact that it remains wet to the touch and attracts dirt. Messy if working on vehicle after application and dirt literally clings to it. Since it remains wet, it gradually 'rinses' off with each undercarriage rinse throughout the winter. Benefit to not drying is that it can work its way into cracks and crevices.

After extensive research, I chose AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector (HD MP)for my '20 4Runner. Very happy with the application and confident on the protection. Many videos online about this product. Sprays on from 15oz. aerosol cans as a yellowish colored liquid, but dries as a wax-like coating that appears mostly clear. Does not attract dirt, but provides great protection for all treated areas.
