Oil change on 2018 4runner

I got my 2019 runner less than a year now,, and it has 2711 mileage on it,
I heard that i need to change the break in oil 3 month after purchasing, is that true? And what oil need. ?

 

I don't believe that myth, I just changed my oil and filter at 5k miles on my '18 ORP.

For reference I believe the oil is 0-W20.
I may be wrong but that is what I recall.
If you get free maintenance and they will do it at 2500k take it. It will not hurt!

I have maintenance covered on my '18 and the dealer does it "free" at a year or 10,000 as Toyota recommends. They will not cover a free change at 2,500 miles unless you have something worked out with your dealership. I'm not waiting one year/10,000 getting it done within the next few weeks at my garage and I'll pay I've got around 4,700 miles now. One year/10,000 miles goes against everything I stand for synthetic or not just my opinion everybody's is different.

 

What does the owners manual say? Its a large set of books that should be in the glove box.

 

There's not "break in" oil in it, its got whatever they recommend to run in it everyday.

I'm a 10,000 mile oil changer.

I am fine with doing what the owners manual recommends, especially when it's backed up with Blackstone oil analyses from a ton of different owners throughout the years.

I think it is 6 months or 10K miles. that was in 2016 when I purchased the runner.
the dealership service manager said 6 months is the time.. or 10K miles.. then said only 2 oil changes ...

I did not do this free oil change deal because they most times damage stuff. perhaps don't drain all the oil out quick lube .. it takes about 45 min for this engine to have the oil drain .. with your use do it every 6 months 6K miles that is good..

Thing is, one also has to figure time. Not just milage. If a car sits for a year with new oil in the pan, the rest of the motor is suffering from condensation/water from lack of lubrication. Drive it like you stole it and maintain it.

I did the same thing. Paid for the 5000 and 15000 mile changes and had them replace the 10000 and 20000 for free. I now do it myself with Amsoil and split the difference, I change it every 7500 miles

Oh come on, what do the engineers who designed the engine know anyway. And don’t take Blackstone oil analysis as fact, unfounded bias based on old irrelevant technology is where it’s at!

Agree, I have a 16 Trail and run it to 10,000 per Toyota. I even have many, many hours at idle and off-road. 85,000 and still rolling. It's just broke in! I'm not wasting money on unnecessary changes. The Toyota engineers design and build the entire truck so whatever they say is correct IMHO.
Modify your truck, put bigger tires and drive thru water, mud and dust...yep you need to increase the interval. The owners manual has identified extreme conditions.
I plan to sell my 4Runner when I hit 400,000 miles, about 10 years...40 changes as opposed to? It will not increase the vehicles value but change it as often as you like, it's your money.

I for one have nothing to say about this actually I totally agree. I have no other reason for my 5-6,000 mile changes other than I've been doing it like that for years and years and will continue to I admit that's all. Actually it's the same reason I won't change Diff any sooner (well maybe a little but not years sooner.) Hey the engineers set those standards too, right???

 

I drop the oil every 5k, mainly because I'm coming up on a year at that point.....I would have no problem running todays synthetic oils to 10k. Changing the oil on the 5th gen is, imo, very easy and inexpensive, so I have no problem with owners that treat their vehicles to oil changes at the 5k and 7.5k interval.

 

I think this is reasonable. If you are a low mileage driver, then you should probably be changing the oil every 6 months or so.......just because of the time the oil has been sitting.

A lot of other car manufacturers give you mileage or a time period before your oil should be changed. I adopted that strategy, which I realize is a bit contradictory to my statement above, but there has to be some timetable that oil would no longer be effective, right?

Let's say you drove 1,000 miles a year. Would that mean that you should only change your oil once every 10 years? I wouldn't be comfortable doing that.
